For an enjoyable St. Patrick’s Day to all and we wish safe travel to Boherquill Ramblers who have their annual weekend in Northern Ireland.
The Ramblers made the best of the improving weather and brighter days with their longest walk for several months on Sunday March 2nd. The walk started at Taghmon Church in Monilea, near Mullingar, and passed through Parsonstown with its views of Knockeyon and Knockbody at the southern end of Lough Derravaragh. Further on beyond Gaulmoylestown the road became a sheltered laneway leading through a valley and on to Stonehall, beside Lough Patrick. The group walked the road towards Multyfarnham for about a kilometre and a half then turned off the road to follow another lane up and over the hill at Killintown, turning back at the top of the climb to enjoy the wide-ranging view to the north and west beyond Lough Derravaragh. The Ramblers soon found themselves back in Gaulmoylestown from where they returned to Taghmon. The signs of spring were all around during the afternoon with leaf buds bursting in the hedgerows, the birds starting to sing and new-born lambs in the fields. Thank you to Ramblers member Frances Nolan for leading a walk that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
The Ramblers annual trip to Strangford will take place over the St. Patrick’s weekend. A minibus will leave O’Brien’s Garage on the Lynn road in Mullingar on Friday March 14th and the group will return on Monday the 17th after the St. Patrick’s Day walk.
