Cemetery Sunday

Thanks very much to everybody who came in such large numbers for Cemetery Sunday on Sunday 28 July in Abbeylara. A sincere word of thanks to all the people who helped prepare for and took part in the various parts of Holy Mass, the Rosary and blessing of graves. A special word of thanks to Johnnie Flynn, who looks after the Cemetery during the year and to all the other people who helped to prepare the Cemetery for this special event. The Cemetery is looking very well and fittingly prepared for such an important occasion. Let us try to keep it this way. We thank God also for the beautiful summer’s morning weather that we all enjoyed. May God have mercy on all our dead.

Soccer Club

Bag Packing

We had a great day in Dunne’s Stores on Friday 12 July. It was our first venture at bag packing and to the members of our Active Retirement who helped on the day, thank you so much.  The crack was ninety and the Dunnes Stores staff and customers were so helpful.  Thank you to Dunnes Stores for allowing us to use their premises for our fundraising.

Ploughing & Heritage Day

Colmcille Ploughing & Heritage Day takes place on the land of Mr. Eugene & Bernadette Reilly, Smear on Sunday next the 18 August. There is a fantastic line up of all Tractor Ploughing Classes and a Vintage Parade on the day. There is also great entertainment for children which includes a dog show, a hen show, face painting, bouncing castles and much more. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the fun! The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Sunday 1 September. Ceremonies begin at 2.30pm with the Anointing of the Sick and Mass will be celebrated at3.00pm. In this “The Year of Faith” we might use this opportunity to express our faith as a family on that date.

Tidy Towns

Saturday night Bonus Ball winners for the month of July were: Kevin Smyth, P. J. Reilly, Aaron Drake and Kitty Mahon. Numbers are available at P. J. Farrell’s shop from Sunday to Saturday, if you are not in, you can’t win. Judging is still going on, and we are anxiously waiting for this year’s results (September) with so much done and a lot more to do.  I urge everyone to be on their guard and fight the litter campaign.  Some vandalism has occurred to the piers down at the river bank on the Apartments side of the river.  If anyone noticed any unusual behaviour in this area during the last few weeks, please let us know. It takes a long time to get things right and only five minutes to set things back by a month or so.

Foroige Youth Club

An inaugural meeting to set up a Foroige Club in Granard area will be held in Lus Na Greine on Wednesday, 25 September at 7.30 pm. We welcome volunteers, parents and all young people interested in this to come along. It is envisaged that this club will run alongside all our other youth services and youth groups as normal.
