We offer our sympathy to the Connaughton family from Loughlinstown, Rathowen on the death of their mother Mary Connaughton last Thursday. To Mary’s children, Rose, Francis and Liam, her grandchildren and extended family members we send our deepest sympathy. Mary was laid to rest in Russagh graveyard after her funeral mass last Saturday. May she rest in peace.
Just a quick reminder that anyone can still join the Rathowen Text Alerts by filling up a form they can get in Rathowen Post Office and paying €20. There has been a lot of burglaries in the area and the elderly been robbed in their homes. Do not let a stranger into your house especially when they say “they are broken down and want to use your phone”. Another excuse the use is asking about tourist attractions in the area eg: Holy wells. The elderly can avail of panic buttons, these will alert a specific person to your distress, please contact your local councillor or your nearest Garda station of more information.
The Play Ground is now open to the public but the Community Park is still closed until we are given the ok for insurance and for the grass. As you all know this new park has been reseeded and the very young grass needs time to grow and be prepared to be played on. The RCD thanks the community for their patience but asks that you respect that the Community Park is closed and there is no insurance for the public to go into the Park yet.
Just a few more weeks and all paper work will be cleared up and the park will be opened to the community to enjoy.
Next draw is Monday 19th August. Results of last draw held 5th August was no winner and the drawn ticket winners of €30 were Shane McGovern, Lisa Fulham & Lily O’Connor. “The community of Rathowen is planning a Gathering on 31st of August, incorporating a reunion for St Thomas’ NS, Rathaspic NS (closed since the mid-80s) and Rathowen NS. Among other events, it is planned to have a photographic exhibition of Rathowen past and present. We would like to hear from anyone at home or abroad who has old photos or newsreel from any of the schools above, or from any part of the community - village or countryside. In particular old photos of about 1913 would be most welcome. We do not want any original photos or newsreel but would like to hear what you have. Photos will be copied and original returned to the owner. Alternatively photos can be scanned and sent to firstname.lastname@example.org Perhaps you would email us telling of any old photos or memorabilia to email@example.com We look forward to hearing from you, and if you can make it back to Rathowen for The Gathering to reconnect with your roots and meet old friends you will be very welcome.”
