Gowna celebrated the gathering on August Bank holiday weekend. Proceedings commenced on Friday evening 2nd August with the official opening of the recently built extension to St Brigid’s Community Centre by Jack Keys, County Cavan manager accompanied by the blessing of the works by Fr PJ Fitpatrick and Rev Hazel Hicks. The pupils of St Patrick’s National School entertained the large crowd. History and information of activities by local organisations on their achievements over the years were on display. The chairman Seamus Madden of the Hall Committee thanked all the personal that helped in any way to complete the extension to the hall and other associated works. The active age ladies Committee provided refreshments. On Saturday afternoon entertainment was provided by the Development Association in the fair green for the children of the area. On Saturday night a presentation and reception was held in the Pikers Lodge Hotel for the championship winning teams in the 80s. On Sunday night a Mr & Mrs variety show was held in the Pikers Lodge followed by dancing to Dance on Band. A very enjoyable time was had by all who attended the events.
Colmcille Annual ploughing festival and heritage day will take place on Sunday next 18 August at Smear Aughnacliffe at the farm of Gene and Bernedette Reilly. Activities on the day include vintage ploughing and coping, horse tractor and mounted classes, Cornafean tractors, Madden Mules teams display, Vintage cars and tractors, dog show, clay pigeon shoot, bonny baby competition and many more. Queen of the plough, dance in Murtaghs on Sunday night. Music by Cajun Country. A fun day for all the family.
