Church Services

Holy Thursday: Mass of Chrism in St. Mel’s Cathedral at 11.00.

St. Mary’s Granard: Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 8pm followed by Adoration at the Altar of Repose and concluding at Midnight with Prayer and Reflection.

Good Friday: Stations of the Cross at 12 noon. Assemble at Johnny Macken’s and walk in procession to St. Mary’s Church. Lord’s Passion and Veneration of the Cross at 3.00pm. Evening Prayer and Reflection at 8.00pm. Holy Saturday: Blessing of Food with the Polish Community at 12 noon. Easter Vigil at 8.30pm. Easter Sunday: Dawn Mass at Granardkille Cemetery at 5.15am. St. Mary’s Church: 9.00am and 11.30am.

Poker Classic

St. Mary’s GAA are holding a Poker Classic in Granard Community Centre on this Friday 3 April. Buy in €30/rebuys/add-ons. 25% additional “Early Bird” chips for ticketholders or anyone who turns up before 7:30pm on the night. First prize €1,000. Country Markets

As Friday is Good Friday the market will be held on Saturday from 9-00am to 12 midday at Upper Main Street. We will celebrate Easter with a free raffle for all customers and Easter greetings are extended to all our patrons.

Easter Festival

Granard Easter Festival takes place on this Saturday and Sunday 4 and 5 April. A fun filled action packed weekend is in store for everyone. Historical walk on Saturday Morning at 11.00am with local historian Jimmy Donoghue starting at the Credit Union building and finishing at the Motte; a Grueling 5k run on Saturday afternoon at 3.00pm sponsored by Durkin Podiatry Granard commencing at Kiernan Milling Ballinalee Road with the Finish Line on Main Street there will be €500 in prizes. At 9.30pm on Saturday night a not to be missed Novelty “Granard’s Grand National” kindly sponsored by Paul Fay Bookmakers. Easter Parade on Sunday staring from Granard Mart Car Park at 2.30pm followed by Street Entertainment for children and Live Music with Pascal Liz and Davy. Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Barrack Street Granard commencing at 8.45pm. The Jackpot is now €12,900 in 42 calls or less. Your continued support is appreciated. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.A.A. Clubs.

Collection

The Co. Longford branch of MS will be holding their annual church gate collection throughout the county on this weekend Saturday 4 April and Sunday 5 April. Your support will be much appreciated.

I.C.A.

The next meeting of Granard I.C.A. guild will take place on Thursday, 9 April owing to the first Thursday of the month being Holy Thursday. This is the AGM of the guild and we look forward to seeing many new members for the coming year.

New2U Shop

The SVP shop is open at lower Main Street Granard with plenty of bargains for everyone. Opening hours: Monday morning from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

Friday and Saturdays 10.00am to 5.00pm and first Tuesday of each month from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Come along and bag a bargain while supporting SVP locally.

Killeen Players

The Killeen players will present “The Real McCoy” on Easter Monday at 8:30pm in Thomas Ashe Hall, Proceeds of the play goes to “Longford Palliative Care” The play will be supported by the John Dungan branch of CCE.

Longford Fleadh

The County Fleadh Cheoil will be ran in Edgeworthstown by the Joe Callaghan branch of CCE on the 2nd weekend in May. If you are interested in taking part and have not yet entered you need to do so within the next few days. Contact longfordcomhaltas@gmail.com.

Dancing Reunion

A reunion of the Kitty Carberry School of Irish Dancing Granard and adjoining areas will take place in Crawford’s Pub, Abbeylara on Saturday, 11 April at 6pm. For further enquiries contact (087) 6339490.

Tractor Run

Martin Cadden’s monster Tractor Run takes place on Saturday, 18 April from Mullahoran GFC grounds starting at 1pm. Refreshments served before & after the tractor run. A passenger will be allowed on a tractor if the tractor has a factory fitted seat.  All tractors welcome. Tour De Folly 

Tour De Folly in association with Ballinagh juveniles and Autistic unit Ballinagh National School 80K Cycle and 7K Folly Walk on Saturday 4 April starting at Ballinagh Community Centre.  Volunteers to help on the day would be greatly appreciated.  For more information contact Raymond on 0872649904 or Paddy on 0872695276.

Guitar Lessons

Recent birth

Congratulations to Michael and Karine (Murray) O’Connor, Carragh, Granard on the birth of their first baby - a girl - Chloe Catherine on Friday last at the maternity unit in Cavan Hospital.

Rural Transport

Longford Westmeath Community Transport Ltd. Rural Transport “door to door” services have spaces available for passengers who wish to travel to their local town or village. For this region of Granard/Abbeylara, there are Friday services into Granard via Robinstown – Abbeylara – Creevy / Cloughernal and in the afternoon via Derragh – Killasonna – Lisryan to Granard. The stop and departure point is from the Granard Area Action Group Office on Main Street. All enquiries to transport provider John Maguire at 087-6213526.

Death

Sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of the late Jody McGowan, Creevy, Granard who died on 25 March at St. Joseph’s Care Centre Longford. Removal took place from St. Joseph’s Hospital Chapel to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mullahoran on Friday, 26 March. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday followed by burial in adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.
