Monsignor Vincent McCabe RIP

Monsignor Vincent McCabe RIP

He attended Gortermone NS, Latin School, Moyne, Co Longford and St Pat’s College, Cavan. He was ordained in Maynooth on 20 June 1946 for the Diocese of Kilmore. With the surplus of Priests at the time he went on temporary mission to Los Angeles until his recall to serve as Curate to Rossinver, Co Leitrim in the winter of 1954. In 1956 the lure of the warm climate of Los Angeles tempted him to seek permission to return to serve out the rest of his mission in Los Angeles Archdiocese in the parishes of Santa Maria, Santa Barbara and Santa Catalina. His work included the building of two new Churches and two new schools. After his retirement he was Chaplain in a large nursing home in Los Angeles. His home there was often a meeting place for visiting Irish friends. He travelled to Ireland almost every summer, visiting his family and staying at the home of his late brother Foncy and sister in law Margaret in Tully, Carrigallen. He was one of the last surviving members of the Tully team which won the senior football championship in Leitrim in 1945 where he played an important role in the forwards. He also played for St Pat’s College team in 1939 which won the Ulster Colleges McRory cup. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Later in life he was a keen golfer. He was predeceased by his brothers Fr James, Fr Gerald, Foncy, sisters Sr St Edmund, Margaret, Elizabeth and Kathleen. He is survived by his nephews, nieces and cousins in Tully, Beaghmore and various parts of Ireland and America. Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr Denis Murray P.P., Fr Johnny Cusack, Fr John Phair, Fr. P.J. Corrigan and his cousin Fr Jim Sorohan in St Mary’s Church, Carrigallen on 21 March 2015 followed by interment of his ashes in the adjoining cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam usual.
