Your prayers are requested for the happy repose of the souls of Joe Mangan, Croome, Co. Limerick, who died on Tuesday, 16 December, brother of Angela Walsh, Ballinacross; Annie Roche, Artane, Dublin, formerly Abbeylara, who died on Thursday, 8 January, sister of John Masterson, Toneymore. May they rest in peace.

Tax Rebate

Our parish has received €9,217.35 from the Tax Rebate Scheme for 2013. Thanks very much too all our parishioners who participated in this Scheme. Your participation and support is very much appreciated.

Bingo

Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot now stands at €19,000. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early and enjoy the fun. IT COULD BE YOU!

Operation Transformation

Bunlahy’s Operation Transformation (Battle of the Bulge). Bunlahy Area Action Group hosts Transformation, starting on Sunday, 25 January at 12.30pm in Creegan’s Bunlahy. We invite everyone to come along, get fit and lose a few pounds. The programme will run for eight weeks. Entry fee is €50. This entitles you to eight one hour fitness classes in Canon Kelly Hall every Tuesday night at 8pm. Each Sunday morning commencing on 25 January there will be an organised walk/run at 9.00am from Bunlahy, followed by a ‘weigh-in’. All ‘weigh-ins’ will be carried out in a discrete manner. There will be prizes at completion for individuals and teams who have the greatest percentage weight loss. Cycle and Climb

The 5th Annual Glenn Brady Memorial Cycle and Climb will take place on Sunday, May 31st. This unique event is challenging and most rewarding, with 147km cycle and a 3-3.5 hour climb on Croagh Patrick. So there is plenty of time to train and we will look forward to another very successful day on May 31st. Details on Registration will be available in the coming weeks.

Yoga & Mindfulness

As the studies increase and the exams approach Lus na Greine are hoping to offer a number of specific yoga and Mindfulness classes for young people. If you feel you would benefit from these please call into the centre or telephone 043 6660977.

Blood Donor Clinic success

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service wish to thank the 219 who attended the recently held clinic in St. Bridget’s Community Centre, a breakdown of the total figures show that 17 first time donors and 21 former donors attended the clinic. Two new Facebook pages have been set up to connect the business community and residents of Granard and surrounding areas, and to promote the established enterprises and great new start-ups, along with weekly retail offers, in our town and locality. Local businesses are invited to post the latest news about the business - press releases, products, services and offers - on the ‘Granard Business Community’ Facebook page. Meanwhile, the ‘Granard Community’ Facebook page will highlight all other news and events in our locality, and community groups, and residents, are invited to post what’s happening on the page. The new social media pages were announced on the Shannonside FM news on January 6, along with Granard enterprise being highlighted on their Coffee Selection item during that week. We encourage each one of you living in the town, and surrounding areas, to ‘Like’ both Facebook pages. Just search for each name when you’re on Facebook, hit ‘Like’ and enjoy connecting online.

Irish Vintage Society

Streete Parish Park will host the 2015 Irish Vintage Society All-Ireland on Sunday, July 12. An all-out effort will be made to make this an outstanding event which will not only benefit the parish of Streete but also the counties of Westmeath and Longford. The Charity event held on 28 December 2014 fund will close on January 23. So if you wish to contribute before then, Mary O’Connor will accept donations in aid of Longford Hospice and The Irish cancer Society.

Gun Club

The Vermin Control Scheme has now commenced for this year and will run until the end of March 2015. Any members with vermin please give it into the Vermin Control officer Richard Flynn and James Garvey before 7.00pm on Tuesday evenings.

Training

The Carers Association will have QQI Level 5 Care Skills training in Longford on Tuesday, 10 February 2015.  One day each week over five weeks.  Contact the training unit on 057 93 70221 for more info.

Clothing Collection

Please support the used clothing collection to aid Fr. Nicholas Maanzo and his parish of St. Patrick’s Kitui, Kenya. The collection will take place at St. Bernard’s and St. Mary’s Church Car parks on Wednesday, 21 January between 9.00am and 12 midday.

Membership for 2015 can now be paid to Kevin Murphy, Carra, at your convenience, please, as follows: €50 adult players, includes membership and insurance; €35 student players include membership and insurance; €25 adults; €40 per couple; €10 non playing students and €10 OAP. An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office, Main Street, Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.
