WELL DONE: Now that the dust has settled on all the hype and build up to the Olympic games in London over the past month we can take a clearer look at how our Irish representatives accounted for themselves. There were those like Katie Taylor and John Joe Nevin who took top honour and others who took awards further down the line. But let us not forget all those who had the honour of wearing the green blazer but didn’t make it to the top. Our local man Derek Burnett was one of so many more who did not win honours but nevertheless who did us proud. Derek has earned the respect and admiration of all his County Longford supporters. He has now represented Ireland in his chosen sport in the past four Olympics which is a great achievement in itself. Derek is still the number one marksman in Ireland, a position in which he should be proud of. We congratulate him on his achievements on the shooting ranges around the world and look forward to him taking his place among the best in the world. He can hold his head up with pride and dignity. Thanks to the experience Derek.

ROYAL CANAL: There was a very important meeting of Royal Canal enthusiasts in the enterprise Centre last Tuesday night. For all those who have been involved with the old established Royal Canal Amenity Group it was the end of an era. The RCAG was established by committed group along the entire length of the canal about thirty years ago. This group set about restoring the canal which was closed in 1962 by applying themselves to cleaning up the disused water by manual labour machines and the help of various FAS schemes waterways Ireland also came in with heavery machinery and technical advice. The work was completed in 2010 and the RCAG had finished the job it took on to do. A new committee is now formed in this locality which will be known as the Foigha Kenagh Royal canal group who will replace the old RCAG. There was a very lively debate and discussion at the meeting which was chaired by Charles Harrison. The amount of voluntary labour and public support financially and morally was greatly appreciated by those who were in the front line down through the years. Without this great public spirit and dedication nothing would have been achieved. We must not forget all the dedicated members along the canal from Clondra to Dublin who were always available to help out . Also the Fas workers and their supervisors who did tremendous work since the scheme began and who we hope will be available for many years to come. We thank all concerned after a lively discussion the following committee was elected. Chairman Pat Newman vice chair Bernie Mathews, treasurer Margaret Blaney assistant treasurer Seamus Madden;secretary Elizabeth Hall; assistant sec Paul Coe PRO Harry Hall, ass PRO John Ward. Items such as signage, toilet facilities slipway phone numbers, play area and walking routes were put on the agenda
