In the last few months there have been rumours that CIE or now known as Irish Rail were considering closing Dromod railway station. It would be amazing that they would even consider such a move especially after spending hundreds of thousands of euros installing automatic ticket dispensers, extending the platform and re doing the foot bridge. From my viewing it is would be one of the busier stations on the line any day you pass the car park is full of cars so hopefully the powers to be will see this and keep it open.
Farmers Rights Campaign
The Ballinamore Library ‘Picture of the Month’ for November is a framed document titled ‘Leitrim Roll of Honour 1966 – 1967 Famers Rights Campaign’. It was presented to the N.F.A in Leitrim by Rickard Deasey, former President of the N.F.A. It details the Leitrim County Executive Officers 1966 – 67, Chairman: Hugh Leddy, Hon Secretary: Jim Finn and Treasurer: Liam Ellis. It outlines that on October 12th 1966, 20 Leitrim farmers started on a walk to Dublin. They were Hugh Leddy, Joseph O’Connell, Noel Dolan, Peter Flynn, Larry Gaffney, Desmond Quinn, Peter Honeyman, Hugh P. Brady, Shay McGovern, Tommy Heraghty, Bartley Feeney, Liam Irwin, Michael Clancy, Pat McGoldrick, John J. Smith, Peter O’Connell, John J. Duignan, Thomas J, Heaney, Marcus Clements and Thomas Kelly. Other farmers from the area included Hugh Faughnan, Thomas Newton, John J. Reynolds, Gerry Moran, James Foley, John Ward, Brendan Keville and Jack Shanley. Farmer’s rights campaigns are very topical at the moment so the protests of 48 years ago may bring back many memoires to the people of Leitrim. If this is the case why not call to Ballinamore Library during the month of November and see the names of the farmers which are beautifully written on this document. Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday & Friday 10 - 5.30pm; Tuesday & Thursday 10 - 8; Saturday 10 – 5, with daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the late Fr Thomas Flynn, CC, Granard, former parish priest of Killoe and a native of Gortletteragh parish who died on Friday last at the Midlands regional Hospital, Mullingar. Fr Thomas was laid to rest in Gortletteragh cemetery on Monday last. May he rest in peace.
We send our congratulations to popular local couple John and Geraldine Thornton on celebrating their silver wedding anniversary recently. The annual Mass for the recently deceased Leitrim people in Dublin will take place on Saturday next, 15th November at 6pm in Airfield church, off the Malahide Road, Dublin. The celebrant will be the Rev. Fr Tom Colreavy PP. This year we plan to particularly remember our colleague Kevin O’Malley who made such a great contribution to Leitrim GAA over his many playing years and who played on many teams with Fr Tom. After Mass there will be a social gathering with light refreshments in the church rooms. Despite the fact that Fr Tom has retired he has arranged this Mass in his former church and is hoping that many Leitrim people and their friends will attend the Mass and social gathering. As you have a large mailing list of Leitrim GAA supporters living in Dublin I would appreciate if you would forward this mail to as many of them as possible as they may wish to attend that Mass. If there are any queries about the Mass please call Liam 086-8392105.
Badminton continues at Mohill Sports complex tonight, Wednesday and every Wednesday starting at 8pm. Newcomers are always welcome.
Good luck Feargal
We wish the best of luck to our own Feargal McGill who at this stage is “down under” in Melbourne with the Irish compromise rules team. This is Feargal’s third time as tour manager of the team and indeed no better man for the job. The team will play a warm up game in Melbourne this weekend and then travel to Perth for the big one the following weekend.
