The Kinkeen connection
There are few T.V. watchers, irrespective of age or interests, who will not sit up and take notice at the mention of a familiar local name or face expected to make an appearance on our screens. On Monday November 3rd, thanks to a relative, I had prior notice that a young man from this community would have an input in a programme to be shown later in the night. The B.B.C. programme “TRUE NORTH: The Longest Night” was due to run between 10.25 and 11.25p.m. The excellent documentary captured the activities of six different people on a December night in 2013 doing what is termed “the graveyard shift” or “graveyard slot” in the hours between late night and early morning, when most of us are asleep, and few watching television. There on the screen were the stories of worker in a homeless shelter, night-time photographers plying their trade, a taxi dispatcher at work, a street cleaner at work in his area, a power station manager, two turkey farmers, all engaged in enhancing their own lives and those of others, their occupations vividly depicted by excellent camera work. Included in the credits, that followed the programme, was the name of George Gannon, son of Jim Joe and Eleanor Gannon of Kinkeen.

There was joy for Graham and Denise Strutt with the birth of their baby son Richard Hedley. Success came to Noel Connolly Ardunsaghan with the winning of two thousand pounds in the Leitrim G.A.A. Lotto Draw. Jim Joe Gannon’s animal was adjudged winner of the Drumshanbo Mart Cup at the Mart Show and Sale. Rachel Kennedy, Aughoo was winner of the Slip Jig, Single Jig and Jig competitions at the Ita Cadwell Memorial Feis in St. Brigid’s G.A.A. Club, Navan Rd., Dublin. Drumreilly’s Noel McGirl’s goal in the dying minutes of their game against Fenagh at Cloone gave his side a 1-3 to 0-4 win over Fenagh at Cloone and a date in the Junior final against Allen Gaels. The deaths took place of Drumdiffer-born Mr. Michael Quinn, Ballyfermot, Dublin and of Aughalough-born Mrs. Teresa Maguire Reidy, St. Alban’s. R.I.P.
Sympathy is extended to all the relatives of the late Seán Flanagan, Aughawillan, who has died in the U.S.A. Seán was a member of the Leitrim team, and also played at midfield for Drumreilly in the late sixties. Faoi chúmhdach na naingeal go raibh a anam uasal.
