Following over 52 years working as a Baker, Mr Liam Sweeney, Drumgerd, Killeshandra retired from Cully’s Bakery on 15th December last. He started working in O’Dowd’s Bakery, Killeshandra at a young age and came to Cully’s for a year in 1967. Liam them went to England for a year but returned and worked again in O’Dowd’s which had been leased for some time. He then worked in Mc Keon’s Bakery in Ballinamore but when Sonny McKeon passed away in 1982 Liam returned to Cully’s where he has worked happily for the past 32 years. His experience was invaluable when the company moved to new premises some years ago and was a dedicated and loyal member of staff who always took great pride in his work. To mark his retirement the company held a party in his honour in the Breffni Arms Hotel and made a small presentation as an acknowledgement of his contribution to Cully’s Bakery over the years. Arva Agricultural Show Society held a Table Quiz on Friday last in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva. There was a great turnout and a good night was had by everyone present.
There was a general air of disbelief followed by a huge sense of sadness when news spread of the sudden death of Mrs Rose Smith, Farrangarve, Arva which occurred at her residence on Saturday, 18th January. A member of the popular Gumley family from Castlepoles, Arva; Rose has lived in Farrangarve since her marriage to her husband Francie. She played Camogie in her youth, both in Cornafean and in Dublin and following her marriage she helped coach the young girls in St Mary’s National School, Arva when they were competing in schools Camogie. She was a staunch supporter of the St Patrick’s Arva Football Club and along with Francie never missed a game whether home or away. Rosie was a very vocal supporter so the players always knew she was in attendance. She was involved for many years helping out at the annual Water Safety classes at Gartylough, Arva and always manned a Water Station for the Breffni 20K Challenge which was a welcome sight for the many participants with just over a Kilometre to go to the finish. She was a great Bingo supporter and was nearly always present in Arva and other local sessions where she enjoyed meeting her many friends. Rose was predeceased by her darling daughter Geraldine in 1981 which was a very heavy cross to bear. She was also predeceased by her brothers Patsy and Jim (Donegal) and is survived by her daughter Deirdre, Arva, son Adrian in Perth, Australia, grandson Dillon, son-in-law Danny, brother Michael in London, sisters Mrs Bridie Bell, Kildare, Mrs Kathleen Mc Keague, Manchester, Mrs Helen O’Reilly, Mullahoran, nephews, nieces, brothers and sisters in law and many friends to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. There was a continuous stream of mourners calling to her home where her remains reposed until removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva where they were received by Rev Donald Hannon C.C. who also officiated at the Requiem Mass and burial in Coronea Cemetery. Both removal and funeral were well attended and a Guard of Honour from Arva Juvenile football club greeted the removal in memory of her help to young players over many years. While this was a difficult time for all the family it was particularly hard for Rosie’s son Adrian who was preparing for his wedding in Perth which takes place on this Saturday 8th February. On behalf of the entire community we wish Adrian and his fiancée Julie every happiness in the future.
