This has been another exceptionally busy week for the Streete Bowls Club. On Sunday last the club had six pairs competing in the Westmeath Doubles competition in Ardagh. After a great afternoon’s bowling, the following couples qualified for the semi-finals: Martin Farrell and Dean Victory along with Pat Hayes and Brendan Quaine from the Ardagh club. From Streete club, Pat Kelly and Finbar Mullen were joined by Catherine Costello and Liam Connaughton. Martin and Dean just got the better of Catherine and Liam whilst Finbar and Pat overcame their Ardagh rivals Brendan and Pat. This resulted in an Ardagh versus Streete final which was really worth waiting for. It went down to the last end with Pat Kelly and Finbar Mullen just getting there, thus ensuring victory for the Streete club!! This competition had eluded the Streete club until now. Well done lads! In the Westmeath League Streete A beat Mullingar and Streete B emerged victorious over Ballymore. Both games were played at the Streete Complex. StreeteC travelled to Ardagh on Thursday night but just lost out on the night. The Christmas Doubles have been drawn and will take place from next week for the Raymond Murphy shield. New members are very welcome at the club.
Oliver Usher led the Ramblers on a walk around the historic town of Kells on Sunday November 17th. The walk began at the Fair Green, the setting for the town’s fairs in the past and then Oliver led the way out of town on the road to Virginia for a visit to the Victorian Waterworks, now just a rather neglected feature but when it was built in 1897 it was a great advance in supplying piped water to the town of Kells from the River Blackwater. The group next climbed the hill overlooking the waterworks and the town to the Spire of Lloyd, a 30metre high tower designed by Henry Aaron Baker for the First Earl of Bective in 1791, in memory of his father. This folly provided work for local people during a minor famine in the 1790s and it stands next to a graveyard for those who perished during the Great Famine of the 1840s. The afternoon’s steady drizzle was now becoming heavier, so the Ramblers made their way down the hill back into Kells and their cars for the journey home. Thank you to Oliver for another of his very interesting guided tours. The Ramblers will walk in Mullingar on Sunday December 1st. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet in Dunnes Stores overflow car park in Harbour Street at 2pm. The Ramblers Christmas Party will be held at The Rustic Inn in Abbeyshrule on Sunday December 15th. There will be a short walk beforehand, starting at 2pm and the meal will begin at 4.30pm. The charge will be €25 each and those who wish to attend are asked to contact Brian Nerney at 086 2596656 or Patricia Bruton at 087 9812801. All donations for the usual raffle will be welcome. There will be a Craft Fair at the Rustic Inn on the day of the Christmas Party which could be of interest to many of the Ramblers.

As mentioned last week to end our Gathering Year it is intended producing a calendar which will contain many memories and will be a great gift to post to family members and friends away from home. All support will be greatly appreciated. Please give it your consideration and tell others about it. Any club wishing to have their Main events highlighted on the calendar please contact Brian 086 2596656, Kevin 087 1375222 or Pat 086 8433355.

Streete Parish Park Vintage Club wish to support the children and people caught in unfortunate situations far beyond their control in the Philippines at the moment. We are holding a fund raising night in Fiddlers Green Pub, Streete on Saturday night, 7th December. We thank Jim Phelan owner of the pub who has offered his premises and who is sponsoring the music, finger food etc. for the night. It has been decided all proceeds will be donated to the fund through the charity Plan Ireland as they are on the ground providing immediate relief to the children and communities who need it most. By giving the gift of clean water you are saving a life. Other gifts include school desks, tents etc. In light of the current crisis in Syria and the Philippines your support just now is critical. We in Streete Parish Park Vintage will do what we can to make a contribution no matter how small to do what is needed where it is needed most. Donations etc. can be given to or sent to John Parker 086 8301347, Pat Duffy 086 8433355 or Brian Nerney 086 2596656 or email@example.com. We know money is scarce, but do what you can, all small donations will add up to something worthwhile.
