Healthy Events 2013: We brought our Healthy Events 2013 Campaign to this year’s field day with the focus on Sun Safety and avoiding substance use/misuse. We continued our display in the registration area of all the health promotion literature from the HSE, Irish Cancer Society and safefood that we have had available at all our Ardagh\Moydow\Glen Community Games events this year, including the Leinster Table Tennis Finals. With brochures about smoking dangers and help with cessation, growing up smoke free, how to reduce your risk of cancer, sun safety- have fun and be smart in the sun, exercise- get active, and get kids on the go, Little steps to eating well and healthy eating using the food pyramid, resilience and positive mental health there was information for everyone. We appreciate all the support from Fiona Gallagher, M and the Longford Health Promotion Unit. As our whole day was smoke, alcohol and drug free we had plenty of posters made by the children with their own slogans on display. Smoke stinks! No smoking, kids at play. Fun and games are guaranteed, second hand smoke we do not need! Thanks to Gillian Hobson at Loughrey’s Pharmacy we were able to provide each child with an individual packet of SPF factor 30 sunscreen as well as the Irish Cancer Society Sun Smart bracelet- Take Care In The Sun, which changes colour with sun exposure. Even in our Irish weather everyone can apply the Sun Smart Code - Slip, Slap, Slop to reduce the risk of skin cancer when they are out in the sun. Slip on protective clothing, slap on a hat, slop on sunscreen, seek shade and wear wrap-around sunglasses. We banished the fizzy drinks and crisps, and I don’t think we even missed them! All the children enjoyed a bottle of water and fresh fruit & veg- apples, bananas, grapes, tangerines & carrot sticks at the finish line, there was even plenty for moms and dads. If anyone would like more information or to get involved in promoting Healthy Events with us please contact Brigette Lynch Scott or Leslie Finnan at any time.
