St Mary’ s Parish Park Society: At the recently held AGM of St Mary’s Parish Park Society the Chairman, Owen Kearney welcomed those in attendance and sympathised with all in the parish who suffered bereavement since the last AGM. He made special mention to the passing of the late Bobby Burns, who, stated the Chairman, will always be remembered in his native parish. It was reported that the usual park maintenance was carried out over the past year and that Granard Celtic FC used the park for home games. The following officers were returned: Chairman: Owen Kearney, Vice-chairman: Patsy Martin, Secretary: Seamus Finnan, Joint Treasurers: T P Smith and Andrew Gettings. The meeting concluded with a prayer for all in the parish who passed to their eternal repose over the last year.

World Youth Day 2013: Takes place in Rio de Janeiro from Friday 26 July to Tuesday 30 July. Because of distance and cost to go to Rio de Janeiro an alternative is now available. A link up with the World Youth Day event takes place in Faversham in Kent. It is called Brightlights 2013 and will be held in the beautiful grounds of Aylesford Priory, home to the very welcoming Carmelite Community. With large screen link up with World Youth Day in Rio, live bands catechesis, guest speakers and more this carnival atmosphere will be the next best thing to being in Rio this Summer. It is a great opportunity for young people to experience youth ministry at such an amazing event. It is offered for young people 17-30 years. The cost is €600 approx. Longford Federation ICA: Longford Federation ICA are hosting an Information Evening in the 98’ Hall, Ballinamuck, on this Thursday 25 April at 7.30pm. Laura Shaw from Longford Garden Centre will attend. Her topics will include - Lawn Care; Colour with Perennials and Maintaining your Rose Garden, followed by a Question and Answer session. During the second part of the evening Garry Brady, Environmental Officer with Longford County Council will talk to us about ‘How to use Leftovers’ and ‘Food Wastage’ as part of the “Food Wastage Programme”. Tea and refreshments will be served. There will be a Raffle for valuable prizes also. Admission is €5. Everyone is welcome. Longford ICA wish Suzanne Dooner Killashee the very best of luck in the local Longford Rose of Tralee competition. Selection night takes place in the Longford Arms on Saturday next 27 April. Tickets are €15 which is actually a bargain when people see the show that will be in store and the event is in aid of St Christopher’s. So ladies you are urged to put on the “Bling” and come out in support of Suzanne on the night.

Reminder: The 3rd Annual Cycle and Climb to Croagh Patrick for the Parish of Granard Lourdes Invalid Fund, will take place on Saturday 1st June 2013. Last year was a very successful and enjoyable day as over 40 cyclists completed the event while many more people participated in the climb. We hope this year will be equally successful, and there is plenty of time for any aspiring cyclist to fit in the training. A special event to launch this year’s cycle will take place on Saturday 4th May starting at 9am on Saturday morning with a Static Cycle “1500km from Granard to Lourdes” followed by a Fancy Dress Party in John V. GAA Mark Gathering: Longford GAA are having a weekend of events on the May Bank Holiday weekend. There will be no match fixtures throughout the county at any level for the Saturday. There are many events planned including a 5km road a race. On Sunday night 5 May there will be an event at the Backstage Theatre – A night with the Blue and Gold when players from the 1960s to the present day will be interviewed in an “Up for the Match” format with Ciaran Mullooly and Sinead Hussey. Friends of St. Luke’s: Friends of St. Luke’s Hospital wish to thank most sincerely all those who contributed so generously to the recent Church Gate Collection. Thanks also to the collectors who gave of their time on Saturday night and again on Sunday morning.

Collection: The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland will hold a church gate collection at all Masses at St. Mary’s in Granard next weekend 27 and 28 April. All donations  greatly appreciated.

Bunlahy Area Action Group: Would like to thank all that supported our recent play in Community Center Granard which was a great success for our group. Bunlahy Area Action Group has extended their litter pick up on approach roads. We would hope that these areas could be kept litter free.

Night Vigil: The next First Friday/Saturday all night reparation and adoration vigil to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary is scheduled for Friday the 3 May commencing at 10 pm.  The month of May is where we pay particular devotion to honouring our Blessed Mother. There are two venues, one is the Chapel of Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown and the second one is in St Anne’s (Former Mercy Convent), Convent Lane, Mohill. All are welcome. Recent Marriage: Congratulations to Ann Kiernan, Killasonna and Shane McGovern, Cartron who were married in St. Mary’s Church Granard on Friday 19 April followed by a reception in Kilronan Castle, Co. Roscommon. We wish this popular couple every happiness for the future.

Recent Deaths: Sympathy is extended to Mary Farrell, Tully, Coolarty, on the death of her mother, Kathleen McGlynn recently. Funeral Mass took place in St. James’ Church, Cloonbroney on Friday 19 April. May she rest in peace. The death of retired Detective Garda John Murren, Carragh, Granard, occurred unexpectedly at his residence on Sunday 21 April. His body reposed at the family home until removal to St. Mary’s Church, Granard for funeral Mass at 2pm on Tuesday followed by burial in Aughafin Cemetery, Edgeworthstown. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his loving wife of 50 years Helen, daughters Anne Moylan, Imelda Gilligan, Catherine Sheridan, Joan McEvoy, Trish McHugh and Aoife, grandchildren, sons-in-law, extended family circle, relatives friends and former work colleagues.
