BALLYMAHON GIRL CHOSEN AS LONGFORD ROSE: Our heartiest congratulations to Aisling Farrell, Rathmore who has been chosen to represent Longford in the Rose of Tralee competition at a Gala selection in the Longford Arms Hotel on Saturday night last. A former student at Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School, Aisling is now a Medical student at UCD and enjoys art and wakeboarding. An accomplished musician, following her mother Susan’s footsteps, Aisling has achieved a diploma in piano teaching. We wish Aisling, a very outgoing and friendly young lady, the very best of luck in the Rose of Tralee competition later in the year.

CANAL WALK: The Canal Walkers Group 9th Annual Walk takes place this Sunday May 5th. The Bus departs outside Diffleys at 12 o’clock. All Walkers are asked to return their Sponsorship cards on or before the day.

YOUNG FOOTBALLERS RECEIVE THEIR MEDALS: Congratulations to the following students who received their Leinster School Football Medals on Monday night last week in the Mercy Secondary School in Granard…Paddy Farrell, Gary Kenny, Rory Connor, Niall Sheehy, Shane Kenny, Fergus Farrell and John Reed, all from Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School, also Andrew Farrell and Martin McGoey from Ballymahon Vocational School. The Presentation was made by Mark McHugh, Donegal, All-Ireland Medal holder. The lads were on the team who won the Leinster Vocational Schools Final when they had a great win against Kildare a few weeks back. Well done to all involved.

WALK IN MY SHOES: A Fun Walk to raise funds for the provision of Free Mental health services for young adults across Ireland will take place on Sunday 28th April from Leo Casey pitch at 12 noon. Wear your funky or mis-matched shoes and donate two euro on the day. Everyone welcome.

DIVISION 2 FOOTBALL: Well done to Ballymahon Div 2 team who had a narrow win against Mullinalaghta on Sunday afternoon last. The Division 2 League game was played in Mullinalaghta. They are now in the semi-final of this competition. We wish them the best of luck .

INNYSIDE SINGERS: Innyside Singers will be meeting for final rehearsal on this Thursday night, May 2nd at 8.00p.m. in St. Matthews Church. It is very important that all members attend on the night. Their Summer Concert will be held in the Church on Monday evening, May 6th at 7.00p.m.

HARVEST FESTIVAL: Longford Harvest Festival will be held in Newtowncashel on Sunday, 1st September. The event will feature working displays of vintage machinery, horse and tractor, with associated demonstrations and lots of activities, something for all the family. Proceeds from the day go to St. Christophers.

TITANIC EXHIBITION: The Carrickedmond P.T.A.A. trip to the titanic Exhibition in Belfast will take place on Sunday 30th June. SUMMER CHORAL CELEBRATION: Tickets are now on sale for a special Summer Choral Celebration which we look forward to sharing with our friends from Landevant-Landaul in France and in this, the year of the Gathering. The Innyside Singers are presenting an evening of choral song in St. Matthews Church on Monday, May 6th with a range of local vocalists and musicians. All are welcome to come along, tickets are just e10 each and the proceeds will go towards supporting local Charities. Tickets can be bought at Nally’s Garage. The Concert will commence at 7.00p.m. sharp.

SYMPATHY: The very sad and sudden death occurred in Auckland, New Zealand where she had been working, of 32 year old Sinead Clarke, daughter of Patsy and Breda, Garrowhill, Co Longford and sister of Gerard and John. Breda is a retired Bank of Ireland employee and worked for some time here in Ballymahon. A huge number of people attended Mass of Celebration of Sinead’s life in Newtownforbes Church on Sunday afternoon for a girl who was so young and vibrant and will be hugely missed by her family and wide circle of friends. Cremation will take place in Auckland. We offer our sympathy and support at this sad time to Sinead’s aunt, Mary Nally and Ronnie, Corner House, Ballymahon, to Patsy and Breda, Gerard and John, her uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends here in Ireland and in New Zealand.

GAA LOTTO WINNER: Congratulations to Cathy McLynn, Darogue who won €e7,000 in the Edgeworthwstown G.A.A. Weekly lotto last week. Well done Cathy, we hope you enjoy your winnings.

RUGBY: Congratulations to Conor Cox, Hawthorn, Ballymahon, son of Seamus and Debbie who received Under 11 Player of the Year with the Longford Rugby Club. Well done Conor.

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2013: Due to financial and safety concerns, the diocesan Youth Ministry has decided not to participate directly in what will be an amazing event, especially since it will also mark the first visit of our new Pope Francis to South America. Instead a decision has been taken to take part in a parallel event, called Brightlights 2013 being organised at Aylesford Priory in Kent. It will take place at the same time as the World Youth Day and there will be live link-ups with the Rio event. It will take place from Friday, July 26th to Tuesday, July 30th. The cost is e600 which will include the cost of flights, transfers, transport, meal and accommodation, theatre tickets and travel insurance. POETRY COMPETITION: The Goldsmith National Poetry Competition is inviting entries for this year’s event. The competition is run in conjunction with the 29th Annual Goldsmith Literary Festival which is one of the longest-running literary events in Ireland. BIKE RALLY: Bicycle enthusiasts from all parts of the country are invited to take part in a very novel High Nelly Bicycle Rally in Kenagh village on Sunday 12th May at 12 noon. Although this event is being organised for the high-nellies, it will be open to all corners from all localities. Sounds like great fun.

MS FUNDRAISER: Many thanks to everyone who attended the “Come Dine with me” Multiple Sclerosis fund-raiser which was held in The Peer on April 13th last and to all the sponsors and helpers who gave so generously. A great night was had by everyone and e1300 was raised for the Longford Branch of MS. Thank you again to everyone.
