WALKING FESTIVAL: The annual Boherquill Ramblers Walking Festival will be held on the weekend of May 10th to 12th. The first walk will be held in the grounds of Tullynally Castle on Friday evening, May 10th, commencing at 7pm in the carpark. On Saturday morning, walkers will meet in Castlepollard at 11.00am from where they will be brought by bus to the start of the walk. This route is relatively easy as there are few hills. The walk will be along Lough Derravaragh across farm land by the Inny River, through bogland and woods before returning to Castlepollard. On Sunday there will be Mass in Fore at 10.00am and the walk will start in Fore at 11.00am. This walk will travel around Lough Lene taking in Randoon Hill and other viewing points before returning to Fore. There are drop off points on both walks where walkers, who so wish, can be brought back to the start by car. Participants should bring a packed lunch on Saturday and Sunday. This will be transported to the lunch stop. The Saturday and Sunday walks start at 11.00am and will take about four hours to complete. Registration will take place bafore each walk, 5.00 euro on Friday evening, and 10.00 on Saturday and Sunday. Boherquill Ramblers wish to acknowledge and thank the landowners along the route for allowing access across their land. As the routes are crossing land with cattle and steam, no dogs are allowed on any of the walks whether on a lead or not. For further information contact Brian on 086-2596656.

HOUSE FIRE: Units from Castlepollard Fire & Rescue Service responded to a house fire in Coole Village on Thursday morning, April 25th, at approximately 8.30am. The alarm call had come in as a suspected chimney fire and the fire service on arrival quickly determined that the incident was more serious with the fire having taken hold in the ceiling and loft spaces. Firefighters using breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera brought the incident under control and made safe.

KILAFREE FUN WALK: Next Sunday, May 5th, sees the fundraising Kilafree Fun Walk taking place around Castlepollard. Kilafree Cemetery Renewal Committee are organising the event, and participants are requested to assemble at McCormack’s Lounge at 2.45pm, with the walk starting at 3.00pm. Sponsorship cards are currently in circulation. The committee have undertaken considerable renewal work in Kilafree Cemetery over the past number of years, with great improvement being evident.

HONDA 50 RUN:- A Charity Honda 50 Run, organised by Archerstown Honda 50 Club, will take place on Sunday, May 26th. Funds raised will be shared by a number of charities including Comfort Fund, Hospice Beds, St. Camillus - Killucan and Brownstown Drama Group. Registration takes place in Brownstown Community Centre at 11.30am, and the fee is 20.00 euro. Refreshments before and after, and Raffle.

BEST WISHES: We extend very best wishes to Michael Fagan, Gilbertstown, Castlepollard, who retired from An Post on Holy Thursday, March 28th, this year, after 30 years of service. His many friends in and around North Westmeath wish Michael the very best of health and happiness in his retirement.
