Gun Club: Abbeylara Gun Club will hold their Annual Open Clay Pigeon Shoot on Sunday the 5th of May, in the Shooting Grounds Derragh. Three traps, Sporting and DTL, €200 High Gun and Lite Pac Ltd Perpetual Cup. €760 total prize money, commencing at 12 noon and last entries at 5.30pm. Your support kindly appreciated.
Active Retirement: The Bealtine Festival takes place during the month of May, and each group takes part by hosting an afternoon or night in their centre and invite members of other clubs to attend. Abbeylara are having an afternoon Tea, Music and sing along party on Sunday 19th in the National School at 3pm. The Bealtine Festival opens on Wednesday the 1st of May in the Back Stage Theatre, members travelling please contact Denis to arrange car sharing; we are leaving Sports Centre at 1pm.
Cnoc Mhuire Class of 86: The re-union takes place this Saturday commencing with a tour of Cnoc Mhuire Secondary School at 7.00pm approx. and afterwards to Paul Fay’s Place for light refreshments and entertainment. Table Quiz: A quiz takes place on Thursday 16 May in the Duke Bar & Lounge Dublin. A bus will travel if there are sufficient numbers of people interested in travelling by bus, please let the Club know your intentions. 1500KM Static Cycle: Takes place on Saturday 4 May in aid of the Lourdes Invalid Fund. It is hoped to complete the 1500km static cycle which is the distance from Granard to Lourdes as the crow flies. It starts at J.V’s corner, Followed by a Fancy Dress Party in J.V Donohoe’s. Participants welcome.
Country Markets: Granard Country Markets are delighted to announce that they now have Slimming World Meals available as well as their usual Bread, Cakes, Jams, Crafts and Firewood. The Market is open every Friday morning from 8-30 am to 11.00 am in the Market house.
Easter Bunny Walk: The Granard Branch of St Christopher’s would like to thank all the walkers, and those who donated Easter eggs, in support of the Easter Bunny Walk from Granard to Abbeylara, especially on such a bitterly cold day. Also thanks to St Bernard’s School who provided the venue and to the ladies who provided the welcome refreshments. The final figure raised was €1,460.
Inaugural Meeting of Granard Area Men’s Group: The inaugural meeting of Granard Men’s Shed was held on Thursday 18th April in Lus na Gréine. Eileen Finan chaired this meeting welcoming six men who are interested in joining the group. Siobhan Harton Development Worker from Lus na Gréine and Mary Mulvey Rural Resource Worker attended this meeting. Lus na Gréine Family Resource Centre is providing the venue and financial support for the Granard Area Men’s Shed. The venture is also being supported by Longford Community Resources Ltd. The group is currently meeting every Tuesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Lus na Gréine Family Resource Centre. The men are currently learning about the resources and facilities available in the centre. They are busy devising an activity plan and exploring ways to raise funds to cover the cost of outings. A range of activities can be organised to meet the requirements of the members. If you would like to meet other men in the Granard area and enjoy some new activities, you are welcome to come along. First Friday: Takes place on Friday 3rd May. The sick and housebound will be attended as usual. Confessions will take place in Abbeylara at 7pm followed by 1st Friday Mass at 7.30pm.

St. Therese National Day of Prayer: This takes place on Monday 6 May in Knock Shrine, Anointing of the sick, Ceremony of the Blessing of the Roses, Concelebrated Mass at 3pm. Veneration and Blessing with Relics of St. Therese and her parents Blessed Louis and Zelie Martin.
Table Quiz: A Table Quiz is being held on 10 May in Fay’s Bar, Granard. All proceeds are going to Granard Childcare Facility (The Hill). The Quiz starts at 9pm sharp; please support your local Crèche on this night. A big thank you to Cummins Hardware, Granard and Quinn’s Hardware, Edgeworthstown for donating shelving, this was very much appreciated.
Support Pieta House ‘Darkness into Light’: A unique 5km walk/run begins at 4am and ends as dawn is breaking. This event takes place on Saturday 11 May at Belvedere House and Gardens. Registration is available online now at dil pieta.ie or contact 087 6368460 to join group in Parish.
Cell Groups: These are small groups of people who meet in each other’s houses to pray and read the scriptures. In Longford Parish there are a number of these groups and one in the neighbouring Parish Killoe. Community Games Sports Day: This year’s Community Games Sports Day is on this bank holiday Monday the 6th of May in Mullinalaghta Park starting at 4pm sharp. Please make sure your son/daughter is entered into the right age groups, i.e. if your child is running in the u8 race they must be under 8 years of age as of the 31 July this year. The rules have changed this year and 2 children from each age and race will go through to the Longford Finals. So let’s make this a great family evening out. The entry fee for adults is €5 and free for kids.
Granard Motte Community Enterprise: Our next public meeting takes place on Tuesday next, May 7th at 8pm in the community centre Barrack St. This is a very important meeting as Mr Bill Thorne of Exodea Consultants will present a draft copy of our Feasibility Study to the meeting. The study is due for completion by the end of May so now is the time to give your opinion. Everyone is invited to come along and hear what is being proposed and give their comments. Our monthly draw for April will also be held at the meeting.
