All local routes are gearing up for the third Longford Cycle Tour which takes place on Sunday, June 24 next. Organised by Longford Sports Partnership and in association with Longford Tourism, Mid West Road Club and the Health Service Executive (HSE), the weekend event will welcome cycling enthusiasts from all over Ireland, all fit and ready to take on the routes of north Longford,

“Last year over 150 participants took to the roads of North Longford for the Tour,” said Siobhan McGuinness, Longford Sports Partnership. “This year, the more seasoned cyclists can take part in our hilly 50km Challenge, while families are invited to enjoy the leisurely 15km family trail. For those wishing to start their training, Mid West Road Club will host Spin and Train sessions on Wednesday evenings at 7pm from the Mall.”

Fiona Baskett (pictured) took part in the 15km event last year and really enjoyed the experience. “I participated in the Longford Cycle Tour for the first time last year,” she explained, adding that it was an event that was “well organised” with lots of support along the route. “It is a great way of locally promoting cycling to keep fit and healthy. Unfortunately the weather conditions were awful on the day and my daughter didn’t cycle as planned but despite that I enjoyed the event and we will definitely take part this year’.

Local Area Representative, Micháel Carrigy, who is currently engaging in a number of initiatives to attract tourists to the area said that the Longford Cycle Tour was a “wonderful initiative”. “This is a wonderful initiative, and great credit is due to the organisers and sponsors, and also to the many, many volunteers giving their time to make the event a success,” he added. “I would like to commend Longford Sports Partnership for its vision in energising all its partners in sport and recreation and to realise its vision of ‘developing sport together’. I would like to thank all involved for bringing this event to fruition.”

The cycle tour will afford people of Longford and visitors to the County with a unique opportunity to enjoy stunning landscapes including picturesque country scenery and rural villages, and all from the saddle of a bike. There will also be plenty going on over the weekend including activities for younger children and families, all of which will be incorporated into BikeWeek 2012.
