HALL OF FAME AWARD
The people in Carrigallen here and the surrounding area will be pleased to see that our former curate Fr Patrsy Young who served here from 1963 – 1975 received the prestigious Hall of fame award at the Inaugural county Leirim arts and Culture awards in Carrick on Shannon recently. The Hall of fame was awarded to Fr Patsy in recognition of his life long commitment to the promotion of and development of Amateur drama. We here in Carrigallen recall the contribution he made in steering the local group to taking a number of national awards something which helped in no small way to build confidence within a community at a time of high emigration and general depression. The success enjoyed by the Drama Group inspired a can do attitude within the wider community with a very positive effect . Although born a Cavan man it was co Leitrim benefited most from Fr Patsy given he spent most of his life in our county serving here in Carrigallen , Dromahaire and Manorhamilton before returning to Ballyconnell as parish priest for some years prior to his retirement and so it was very fitting that the award be made in Leirim having been initiated by the County Council. Accepting the award humble as always Fr Patsy declared he felt embarrassed given the huge array of very talented people who had received awards earlier all of whom could perform and entertain where as he only directed a few plays. But everyone in the room and for a great distance beyond knew he not only directed plays but in doing so he encouraged human beings to reach a potential they hadn’t even dreamt they possessed and the only recompense he desired was that they use that confidence in their personal lives and communities for the betterment of all. It is beyond doubt that those few enthusiasts who initiated the concept of a theatre and a great mart in Carrigallen had come through the Fr Patsy school of positive thinking unknown to themselves. Reports from the parishes where he served confirms he made a similar contribution to encouraging self belief and a pursuit of excellence in what ever an individual or group set out to achieve. Sometimes we are fortunate to have great people pass our way. Leaving a lasting impression and influnece. We here in Carrigallen are such having benefited from the presence of one such great person. Fr Patsy we salute you on the occasion of receiving this award and wish you well or the future.
A large number of Carrigallen parishioners who met the congress bell at Kilbracken bridge which borders Killeshandra (Cavan) and Carrigallen (Leitrim) on Wednesday evening last. The carriers brought it to saint Mary’s Church Carrigallen where a short service was conducted by Very Rev D Murray PP and Rev P McEntire CSSP a native of the parish. The carriers handed it over to the Drumeela carriers at the local mart who handed it over to the Drumreilly carriers at Corrawallen who handed it over to the Ballinamore carriers at Aughoo bridge where the Ballinamore parish boundry commences. Much interest by young and old all over the parish and the weather was windy and cold the rain stayed off.
