The area was saddened by the death of Mr Loel Carroll, Drumalt, Arva which occurred at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home, Longford on 11th August. Loel was born in Tipperary where his father was in the Bank of Ireland but soon after they moved to a branch in Dublin where Loel attended school and later University. He decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and joined Bank of Ireland. He arrived in Arva in 1962 and soon immersed himself in the community – he was a lifelong member of the Arva Area Development Association and was a caller at Bingo in St Patrick’s Hall from the beginning (c 1963) until he stopped calling for health reasons but still worked there each Sunday night until last year. He was a member of the Arva Agricultural Show Society and stewarded every year at the Show. While not really interested in football, he would always join the St Patrick’s Arva GAA Club and support any fundraisers they had. Loel was a devout catholic and attended Mass every day. He assisted in the church where he was a Minister of the Eucharist for many years and also helped out with the church collections. For many years he assisted in the Cavan Citizens Information centre voluntarily where his help was greatly appreciated. Loel is survived by his sister Sr Shirley Carroll, sisters in law and many friends to all of whom we extend our sincere sympathy. His remains were removed to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva and following Requiem Mass burial took place in Coronea Cemetery. A Guard of Honour accompanied his remains on the last part of the journey to the Church made up of members of the Development Association, Show Society and Eucharistic Ministers. Rev Donald Hannon C.C. officiated.
The death occurred at Shannon Lodge Nursing Home, Rooskey on 16th August of Ms Philomena McEntee, Main Street, Arva. She was the last surviving member of a very popular family having been predeceased by her parents and four sisters. Her parents James and Elizabeth McEntee came to Arva to “Serve their Time” in Morris Drapery, Main Street where they met and later married. They bought a business in Ballinamuck and after trading successfully for some years they sold the business and bought the Drapery in Lower Main Street, Arva where the family traded successfully for many years. Alice took over from her parents and following her untimely death Rosaleen came home from America and continued the business until her retirement when they sold the premises to Eamonn and Philomena Gray which allowed the extension of the Hotel. Through these years Philomena was involved in the business and was always on hand to greet customers coming into the shop. They were an extremely generous family who always supported local organisations without complaint. Philomena was predeceased by her sisters Mrs Rosaleen McCann, Mrs Sheila Hand, Mrs Alice McKenna, and Lilly McEntee and is survived by her cousin Gerry Gorman, Legga and Mrs Agnes McKenna, Ballinamuck and many friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy.
