We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the late May Gearty, nee Sanahan, Clonart, Bornacoola who passed away on Friday last at The Laurel Lodge Nursing home Longford. May was was laid to rest in Cloonmorris cemetery on Sunday last. May she rest in Peace.

The national League

Well the 2015 national league started last weekend and there was no disappointments in our area as the local derby between Leitrim and longford ended all square after a nail biting finish that saw Leitrim 2 points ahead with three minutes to play only to see Longford go straight down the field and score a goal leaving them with a one point advantage with time nearly up. But Leitrim kept their cool and got their point to draw level and share the spoils. Great credit must go to Leitrim’s goalie Cathal McCrann who had some amazing saves throughout the game. So it off to Aughrim next weekend to take on Wicklow on their home soil this will be a tough one.

Reeling in the showband years

Last Saturday night in spite of the inclement weather and quite slippery roads a great crowd turned out to the Lough Rynn hotel for a wonderful nights entertainment when RTE’s Ronan Collins hosted super show “reeling in the showband years” bringing us all back to the great dancing days of the Swarbiggs, Paddy Cole band, Roly Danles and more backed by the wonderful Conquers showband. For me Paddy Cole was top with his unique style on the sax and claranette as well as his good humor and singing, I would say Paddy is well into his seventies, well he can still put on a great show. Well done one and all.

Bornacoola GAA

Bornacoola GAA Club has been chosen for the Tesco Community Fund in Tesco, Carrick-on-Shannon. The initiative will see €1000 split between three community groups, depending on the number of “blue disc” votes each group gets. Each time you shop in the store, you will be given a blue disc which you can then add to the Bornacoola GAA pile! So if you are shopping in Tesco, make sure you allocate your discs to Bornacoola GAA - more discs we get, the more money the club will receive.
