With February 1st just come and gone, spring is officially here despite what the weather forecast might tell us. All the traditions attached to February 1st are still being observed, presumably in anticipation of an early spring with fine weather. February has been observed as the Feast of Saint Brigid with Candlemas day and the feast of Saint Blaise on the following days. Some of our more adventurous gardeners are beginning to move out into the garden, no doubt prompted by the appearance of snowdrops and young daffodil shoots. The sowing of onions and other hardy bulbs traditionally took place on February 1st. We also had the pleasure of being presented with a Saint Brigid’s Cross made from rushes on this Sunday morning which is another tradition associated with February 1st.
