Castlepollard Fire & Rescue Service were alerted to attend a reported truck fire at the Cattle Mart on the Delvin/Clonmellon road in Delvin on Saturday evening last, September 13th. On arrival the incident was not as serious as first reported thanks to the prompt actions of the driver, and the damage was limited, with the refrigerated section of the truck being unaffected. Fire fighters cooled down the affected sections of the truck, while monitoring the situation with a Thermal Imaging Camera. Delvin Gardai were in attendance, and traffic flow was not affected.
Culture night takes place across Westmeath next Friday night, September 19th. Local activities include “Spark Of Genius” in Castlepollard Library from 10.30am to 5.00pm. Also in Castlepollard Library, in the first floor Civic Room, “Yesterday Human, Today” will take place between 10.30am and 1.00pm, and 2.00pm to 5.00pm. At 8.00pm in Fore Village, there will be a free guided tour of the Anchorites Cell and the Nugent Mausoleum entitled “Tales of the Crypt”. The tour will set off from the Abbey Car Park and will be directed by Bartle D’Arcy, and will cover the life of the last Holy Hermit to live in the 14th century Anchorites Cell, Patrick Beglan, as well as details of the life and times of the Nugent family. Also on the night, there will be the launch of Bartle D”Arcy’s new guide book for the area, entitled “Mythlands; A Guide to the Legendary Midlands of Ireland”. The launch will take place in Fore Abbey Coffee Shop at 9.30pm that evening. The book is available in print as well as an e-book online.
Taekwondo Instructor Rodney Connolly, 2nd Degree Black Belt, has commenced training in Inspirational Taekwondo in Coole Hall every Tuesday and Friday evening between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. For further information contact Rodney 085-7400638.

M4 Women’s Club
Meetings of the M4 Ladies Club will recommence in Hotel Castlepollard from this Tuesday, September 17th, starting at 10.00am and finishing at 12.00 noon. The meeting will afford an opportunity to make plans for outings and events over the coming year, and will include a small social. There will be a small subscription of 5.00 euro. The late Jimmy Winters
The death took place suddenly on Monday, September 1st, of Mr. James (Jimmy) Winters, St. Peter’s Centre, Castlepollard, and formerly of Woodbrook, Mountrath, Co. Laois. The remains reposed at Guilfoyle’s Funeral Home, Castletown, Mountrath, on Tuesday evening, September 2nd. Removal took place on Wednesday, September 3rd, to St. Fintan’s Church, Mountrath. The funeral took place following Requiem Mass on Thursday, September 4th, with internment immediately afterwards in St. Fintan’s Cemetery, Mountrath. The attendance at the removal, Mass and funeral was large and widely representative of the esteem in which the deceased was held. He will be sadly missed no alone by his immediate family, but by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Jimmy is survived by his brothers Eamon, PJ and Mark, sister Sarah, aunts, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
