Minor Final for Fergal
Congratulations to referee, Fergal Kelly, son of Michael and Carmel who has been appointed to officiate at Sunday’s All-Ireland Minor Football Final between Kerry and Donegal at Croke Park. We wish the best of luck on the day to Fergal who has been refereeing since 2005 and also to all his umpires.
St. Matthews Church Choir has resumed practice after the summer break. The group have their weekly practice sessions in the church on Wednesday nights at 8.30p.m. New members always welcome.
We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Sr. Evelyn Moran , Sisters of Mercy, former teacher with Ballymahon National School on the death last week of her brother, Phonsie, at his home in Ballyleague, Lanesboro. We also extend our deepest sympathy to Phonsie’s wife, Peggy, sons Sean and Noel, daughter in law, Olivia, Noel’s partner Emer, sister Margaret (Kilroy), brother Fr. Pat, grandchildren, and to all his relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

Congratulations to everyone in Foxhall Crescent in Legan who were announced the overall winners of the 2014 Better Estates in Co Longford last week. At the 10th annual award ceremony in the Canal Studio in Slashers, Marian Terrace, Ballymahon was awarded 3rd place in the “Estates built before 1997” and in the Estates built after 2005 Category, Sli na Mona, Ballymahon also came in third. The Best Garden gong went to Avril Kiernan, Sli na Mona and the most Improved Estate prize went to Parkside Gardens. Very well done to everyone involved, it was certainly well worth the effort.
Congratulations to Patrick Rock, son of Noel and Marian, St. Matthews Park who got married on Sept 5th last to Elaine Hogan, daughter of Brendan and Maura, Empor, Ballynacargy at St. Matthews Church, Empor. The lovely wedding ceremony was celebrated by Fr. John Nally, Ballynacargy assisted by Fr. Padraig McGowan, Ballymahon with the beautiful music provided by Kerrie Penrose, Niamh Penrose and Jacquie O’Meara. Elaine looked stunning on her special day in an ivory coloured Wedding gown assisted by her Bridesmaids, her friend Marie McDonald and Patrick’s sister Lisa both of whom looked great in their one-shouldered magenta dresses. Also looking very pretty was the Flower girl Laura Hogan, niece of the Bride. The beautiful flowers at the Church and also the Bridal party’s flowers were arranged by Elaine’s mother, Maura , well done Maura. The newly-weds Patrick and Elaine, their families and lots of friends celebrated the marriage at a Reception in Glasson Golf and Country Club and danced the night away to the music of “Moon Light”. Well done also to Elaine’s father, Brendan who made the 3-tier Cake for the Wedding. Among the many guests who attended were Patrick’s aunt Mary and her husband Sean and their family who travelled over from England for the event. We hope you all enjoyed the day. Patrick and Elaine wish to thank everybody who joined them on their very special day and for all the lovely presents, also to John Martin, their Driver for the day, to Andrea Duncan who did the photography and Michael Carey on Video. We wish the happy couple, who are presently on Honeymoon touring America, many long years of good health, wealth and happiness.
The Innyside singers will resume after their summer break at 8p.m. on Thursday, 25th September at the usual venue, Skellys, Main Street. Newcomers always welcome, male and female. If you would like to sing as part of a group, please come along on Thursday nights.

A month’s mind Mass for the late Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds will take place in St. Mel’s Cathedral Centre, Longford at 12 noon on Saturday next, 20th September.

Death of Brendan Flynn
We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Brendan Flynn, Clooneen, Bornacoola, Co. Longford whose brother Liam was a former Rent collector here in Ballymahon. Brendan’s death occurred on Sept 11th at the Autumn Lodge Care Centre in Longford. Our condolences to Brendan’s brothers J.J. (Mullingar), Gene,(Sligo), Seamus (Lanesboro) and Liam (Newtownforbes, sisters Jeanette Ford, (Mullingar ) and Maura Sheridan, (Granard) brother-in-law, sisters-in-law and to all his relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

Off to the Army

Home from hospital
Welcome home to Eddie Noonan, Rathmore who is home from hospital recovering from his hip replacement. We wish Eddie a speedy recovery.
The Parent and Toddler Group Initiative is a nationally available fund from POBAL/Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA). Parent and Toddler groups (P&T’s) are organised on a not for profit basis and encourage parent participation in childhood development and support, a kind of peer support. Grants will range from €100 to €800 for existing P&T’s, with up to €1000 for new start-ups. Funding is available for Equipment, Training, Materials for Activities, and Minor Refurbishments. The new Child-minder Grant criteria apply if you are minding or intend to mind 2 children, minimum 1 Full Time and 1 Part Time. You must voluntarily notify with HSE and you must not have received a grant previously. You must give undertaking to attend training and network with other minders. You must provide a service for 2 years after receiving the funding. It is recommended that only 1/3 of funding is spent on consumables like paint, sand, and materials for crafts.
