There was shock and disbelief when the announcement was made on Tuesday last, 1st July that our local branch of Ulster Bank is to close in November. This is a major inconvenience to the customers and staff alike and a huge loss to Granard town.

Traders Association

Cllr Micheal Carrigy is organising a meeting on this Thursday night, 10 July at 9pm in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard for the purpose of setting up a Traders Association for Granard and it’s environs. Members of the very successful Ballymahon Traders Association will attend. The main item for discussion on the night is the recent announcement by Ulster Bank to close their branch in the town. The effects on the local businesses and the community and what proposals we can put forward to lessen the effect of the closure of the branch on the town. All business people and interested parties are asked to attend.

Country Markets

Granard Country Markets continues every Friday morning from 8-30am to 11-00am beside Granard Post Office. Fresh vegetables now in stock along with the usual cakes bread buns eggs crafts and firewood.

The Parents Association of St. Patrick’s Primary School, Killeen would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to everyone who attended their recent 5k fundraiser and contributed to making the event such a wonderful success. A special word of gratitude to Maura and Mick McElvaney who very generously sponsored the prizes, provided the use of their premises and gave of their time unselfishly to assist in any way they could. To all the parents who provided refreshments – sandwiches, cakes, buns etc., they were very much welcomed and appreciated. Well done to all the competitors on the day and congratulations to the overall winners – Ciarán Reilly, Liam Higgins, Miriam McElvaney and Aoife Dawson.

Breffni Challenge

The annual challenge takes place on Saturday, 2 August and once again local man, Johnny Macken Snr. is taking part in his 12th Breffni Challenge. Proceeds are in aid of St. Luke’s Hospital Dublin; NBCRI Galway; Cavan Monaghan Cancer Homecare Association. To date the event has raised over €900K for cancer research. This year there a 3 starting points: 20km starts at Meadow View Lounge, Cavan; 13km starts at Community Centre, Ballinagh and 5km starting point is Pump Gen. Sponsorship cards are available from Johnny Macken and your support as always will be appreciated.

The annual Vintage Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday 12 and 13 July 2014 at Kilmore, Streete, Co. Westmeath. The Philip Moran Memorial Tractor run takes place on Saturday, 12 July at 4.00pm. Vintage Show on Sunday, 13 July.
