After more than 40 years involvement Mr John (Don) O’Rourke, Drumnawall, Arva has retired as Sacristan in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva. Don’s parents Michael and Nan O’ Rourke took on the job in 1952 and it also included being Caretaker of the National School and St Patrick’s Hall. As was the custom at the time they also rang the Chapel Bell at 12 noon and 6.00 pm each day. Don would often help out and eventually in 1974 he officially took the job himself. In the intervening years he has been there for every occasion be it weddings, funerals etc. He opened the church each morning and closed it each night and he has been of invaluable assistance to the priest’s of the parish all those years. On behalf of the community we wish Don many years of good health and happiness in his retirement. Rev Donald Hannon C.C. is making a Presentation to Don at Mass on this Saturday night and anyone who has not already contributed can do so this week.
