Active Age

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age held their AGM recently.  As well as electing the Officers for the coming year members were reminded of just a few of the events, outings and trips that took place during 2013. These included trips to ‘the dogs’ at Mullingar and 10 Pin Bowling at Longford Bowling Alley.  We also put up a photographic display in Ballinamore Library as part of Positive Aging Week; we enjoyed some keep fit with Julie Smith in the form of Zumba Dancing and Yoga and had a shopping trip to the Continental Christmas Market in Galway. We went on a 3-day break to Galway in July, calling in at Dan O’Hara’s Cottage and the site of the Battle of the Boyne – some of our members also displayed their acting skills!!  We were active on behalf of other charities too and raised funds for St Vincent de Paul, the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and MS Ireland. Officers elected for 2014: Chairperson – Lottie McGerty; Vice Chairperson – Chris Kiernan; Treasurer – Ann Harte; Social Secretary – Maura O’Rourke; Secretary/PRO – Valerie Elsegood. Thanks were expressed to the outgoing Chairperson, Alfie Harte; Alfie thanked everyone for all their help and support and for making all our activities so enjoyable. Plans are in hand for 2014, including some speakers and activities – but suggestions are always welcome, especially for ‘away days’ and holidays!

Kayak Run

This event will take place in Ballinamore and surrounding area.

The thinking behind organizing the event is to introduce a semi serious sports event associated with the gentle picturesque surroundings of the Shannon Erne Waterways. The event will be suitable for serious sportsmen and sportswomen alike. It is also suitable for people who are interested in a fun event and there are even a number of spaces reserved for those who wish to complete the course in a relay. The event is being hosted at Easter when the town of Ballianmore hold their family fun packed Easter Spraoi. This means the whole family can have a wonderful weekend. The Kayak Run involves a run, a kayak and a cycle. The run will be circa 8km. The kayak will be circa 1km. The cycle will be circa 24km. The run takes place along the canal road towards the golf club in Ballinamore.  It is an out and back course. The kayak is on the canal and again it is an out and back course. The kayaks are sit on tops and will be both single and double. The kayaks are easy to use and stable. The cycle is a loop starting and finishing in the town. It will bring you through a scenic route to Newtowngore and back by the beautiful Garadice lake. Participants will not require much equipment. You will need your normal running gear. Kayaks, paddles and buoyancy aids will be provided.  You will be expected to provide your own bike and it must be in good working order. A helmet is mandatory.  It is on Sunday 20 April 2014 and starts at 1:00pm.  Registration is between 10am and 12 noon but you can register on line now at
