As mentioned previously our Streete Gathering Committee has published a souvenir Parish Calendar with photos taken at our Gathering celebration. The calendar which will be on sale from Thursday of this week will cost €10 and the proceeds will go to Streete Parish Park committee to help defray the cost of our weekend Gathering events, so for this reason alone we trust every household will try to buy one. It would be a lovely gift to send for Christmas especially to those living away from the parish. Calendar is complete with envelope. Postage in Ireland is €1.50 and to the rest of the world, €3.50. The Ramblers first walk of December followed the course of the Royal Canal feeder from the Canal on the northern edge of the town out towards Lough Owel. The Royal Canal links Dublin and the River Shannon; construction began in 1789 and when Mullingar was reached in 1806 the feeder was built near the highest point of the Canal to supply water from Lough Owel. The water still flows and is still surprisingly clear, evidence of the good quality of the spring-fed Lough Owel, although there have recently been suggestions that Lough Ennell could provide an additional feeder for the Canal. The Ramblers followed the footpath beside the feeder past the Famine Graveyard in Robinstown and the fish farm at Cullion out as far as Farranstick near Lough Owel, and then returned to Mullingar through Irishtown. Thank you to Eileen Moreton for leading the afternoon’s walk. The Ramblers will meet for their Christmas Dinner in Abbeyshrule on Sunday December 15th. There will be a walk beginning in the village at 2pm and the Dinner will begin in the Rustic Inn in Abbeyshrule at 4.30pm. The charge will be €25 each and all donations for the raffle will be welcome. Those wishing to attend are asked to contact Brian Nerney on 086 2596656 or Patricia Bruton on 087 9812801. There will also be a Craft Fair in the Rustic Inn on the 15th.
