New Ardagh Book
A new book listing all the headstone inscriptions in the two old graveyards in Ardagh, St. Patrick’s and the one opposite the Community Centre, is now at an advanced stage
of preparation. The inscriptions have been copied in detail and it is hoped to launch the book in late 2013 or early 2014. The book will include a number of extras relating to the parish but in particular a section listing death notices down the years for the Ardagh diaspora who died outside the parish or in a foreign country and whose death is not on record already locally. For example, a death notice from a New York newspaper in 1865 reads “At Brooklyn, New York, James Farrell, aged 65 years-a native of the parish of Ardagh, Co. Longford” Likewise similar information may be found in the old memorial cards etc. So far up to 50 Ardagh born names, both lay and clerical, from countries as far afield as the United States, Australia and Argentina, have been submitted for inclusion – so if you want your forgotten ancestral cousin to be included give us a call with the details. All enquiries to Luke Baxter, Main Street, Longford Telephone 086 3344878 (evenings).
