Active Retirement: We have decided to travel to Youghal for our four-day break on the 11 June staying at the Quality Hotel, Youghal, Redbarn Beach, Youghal, Co. Cork. For dinner, b/b, package only €249 per person, including a luxury coach to pick us up and take us on daily excursions and bring us back to Abbeylara. Community Games: Abbeylara/Mullinalaghta Community Games have entered teams in the following team events: Mixed basketball U11, Boys Basketball U13, Girls Basketball U13, Boys Futsal U13 and Girls Futsal U13 and U10 mixed Gaelic football. The boys Futsal games will be played on Saturday 23 March in Kenagh Centre and girl’s Futsal will be played on Sunday 24 March at 6pm in Kenagh also. The basketball matches will take place over the next few weeks with the finals being held at Kenagh Centre on 28 April. Basketball and Futsal training will be arranged over the coming weeks so watch out on the local notices for that. Mixed Cross Country running will take place in Ballymahon on 2 March at 11am and anyone interested can turn up on the day and take part in 700m and 500m races.

The Virginia Gospel Choir: Will perform in St. Michael’s Church, Castletown/Finea on Friday 15 March @ 8pm. Tickets available from St. Michael’s N.S. Contact 043 6681382. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Nappy Appeal: Melissa Martin is doing a ‘Nappy Appeal’ on behalf of Vesnova Orphanage for Mentally ill Children Belarus, any donations of nappies, wipes or nappy creams would be much appreciated and can be left in Panache Beauty Salon or Granard Library for collection by 5 March. Please help us to help the children.

DeafHear: Services for deaf and hard of hearing people/Longford Clinic. Longford Outreach Clinic is now being held in the citizens Information Centre, Level 2 Longford Shopping Centre, on the first and third Tuesday of every month from 10am to 1pm. Services provided include; minor hearing aid repair (Health Service Aids only) hearing aid batteries for sale €2 a packet, information on Deaftech Equipment, information on deafness, hard of hearing and tinnitus. Granard’s Easter Festival: On Easter weekend – Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March, all roads will lead to Granard for the Easter Festival! An exciting schedule of events is planned for the weekend including a 5K Run, Novelty Tug-O-War, Easter Egg Hunt, Parade, Artisan Food Fare, live music and lots of children’s entertainment! Table Quiz: A table quiz to help defray costs of running the above festival will take place in Fay’s Bar on Friday 1st March.  Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Country Markets: Granard Country Market held their annual general meeting on Friday morning last and the following officers were elected for the coming year. Granard Tourism Project: The next public meeting of the group working on this project will be held on Thursday March 7th at 8pm in the Community Centre, Barrack. Much work has been done to date, but much remains to be done. Our monthly draw will also take place on the night. We welcome everyone to attend and as our feasibility study is still on-going we welcome ideas for the project. So please come along. This project is for the community and by the community.

Community Diary: A Diary is available at Granard Area Action Group office to enable local voluntary groups and fundraising events to log their forthcoming activities for the year so as to help co-ordinate events successfully and to avoid duplication where possible.

Citizens Information: An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Rural Transport Programme: We would always welcome new passengers on board the services; it is open to ALL AGE GROUPS, with FTP holders travelling Free. Single Fare is €3 and Return is €5, for under 65 years. For our local region of Granard/Abbeylara, there are 2 Friday services into Granard = via Robinstown – Abbeylara – Creevy/Cloughernal and in the Afternoon = via Derragh – Killasonna – Lisryan to Granard. Our STOP and DEPARTURE Point is from the Granard Area Action Group Office on Main Street. The Rural Transport office is based in LCRL Longford, Phone 043 3345555. New Adult Karate Class: Due to the huge success of the Children’s Karate Class at the Canon Kelly Memorial Hall, Granard, a new Adult class has started due to popular demand on Wednesday from 6 -7pm. Mayo, who died on Sunday 17 February, sister of Bishop Colm O’Reilly and Larry Crudden, Derbyshire, England a native of Cloonaghmore, who died recently. May they rest in peace.

Altar Society: A well attended meeting took place on Monday night last. The important matters relating to Altar Society members were shared.
