Boherquill Ramblers: The Ramblers held their AGM in Streete Parish Park after a short walk in the area last Sunday afternoon. Club Chairman Brian Nerney opened the meeting and called for a minutes silence in memory of members Michael O’Neill and Alice Daly who passed away during the year. The minutes from last year’s AGM were then read by Club Secretary Patricia Bruton. This was followed by the Treasurer’s report from Co-Treasurers Maura McLoughlin and Alice Nerney. Club Chairman Brian Nerney then gave his Address. He told the assembly that the Club has had another successful year of walks and trips away such as the weekend in Newport Co. Mayo, organized by Declan Leonard. Last year’s trip to Strangford for the St. Patrick’s celebrations was ‘first class’ last year and will be repeated this year. A coach will leave Mullingar on Friday March 15th and the group will return on Monday March 18th. Places can still be booked by contacting Brian at 086 2596656. Brian went on to thank the many members who provided refreshments in their homes at the end of walks as well as Clonkill Hurling Club who offered the use of their Clubhouse and Ballynacargy for the use of their Church Hall. The Chairman thanked Club Secretary Patricia Bruton and Walks Co-Ordinator Paddy Croghan for all their work and all those present thanked Brian for driving the coach during the year and Paddy O’Brien of Rover Coaches in Mullingar who always provide a coach when asked. The Christmas party in the Cornmill was highly enjoyable thanks to the hospitality of the pub. Brian emphasized the importance of the social aspect of the Club where there are many genuine friendships. In his capacity as Chairman of Streete Parish Committee, Brian then thanked the Ramblers for their donation to the new walkway in the Parish Park. The election of Club Officers proceeded as follows: Club Chairman – Brian Nerney, Vice-Chairman and Walks Co-Ordinator – Paddy Croghan, Club Secretary – Patricia Bruton and Assistant Secretary Frank Higgins, Co-Treasurers – Maura McLoughlin and Alice Nerney, PRO – Philip Epps. Under Any Other Business, Paddy Croghan appealed for new walks in order to assemble the 2014 walks calendar by October next. Rambler Nini Murray is a trained coach and she offered to lead the group in warm-up and warm-down sessions. A request was also put out for suggestions for a weekend away in September. Alice Nerney raised the idea of inviting walking clubs in England, Scotland and Wales to join our Walking Festival in May as part of The Gathering. Patricia Bruton suggested members could offer B&B to visitors during the event. Any Club members who have not yet paid their yearly subscriptions of €20 each or €30 for a family are asked to do so as soon as possible. Please note that Patricia Bruton is now accepting payment for the trip to Strangford for the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations; the charge is €250 each. Deirdre Leavy will lead the walk on next Sunday, March 3rd. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm. Alice Nerney is organizing an American Tea Party in Streete Parish Park from 8-10pm on April 6th for her niece, a medical student who is raising funds for a working visit to Africa. Further details will be given in future notes. Finally a sincere thank you to Marian Denning who did all the catering for our A.G.M.
