Seachtain na Gaeilge: These next two weeks sees Seachtain na Gaeilge from 4 to 17 March when we are encouraged to speak our native language.
National Tree Week: The event organised by the Tree Council of Ireland takes place from 3 to 10 March. The launch was held at Belvedere House Garden and Park on Sunday 3 March. The week celebrates all positive aspects of trees in our lives and environment. Groups organisations and individuals are encouraged to plant a tree. Longford Co. Co. are offering Community groups and schools and other organisation in Co. Longford the opportunity to obtain young trees free of charge. These trees are kindly sponsored by Coillte. Rath Mhuire: As we are all aware these are very difficult times for Community & Voluntary Groups and we at Rath Mhuire are hugely encouraged and extremely grateful for the community support we receive, both in terms of volunteers as well as the support for all our local fundraising initiatives, which are so vital to the work we do. Our work is with older people in our communities and we work directly with over 100 people providing supports in respect of social networks, transport, meals, as well as many other projects, at Rath Mhuire Centre and the Dolmen Centre. Currently we are looking for volunteers to participate in the upcoming Women’s Mini Marathon which takes place in June. If you are making a choice to contribute to a local charity (we are a registered charity) or making a legacy we would be delighted if you would consider our organisation. Community Project Purchase of NAMA property at Rathcronan: Our next public meeting takes place this Thursday the 7 March at 8pm in The Community Centre, Barrack St. This meeting forms part of our ongoing feasibility study and as such we invite all individuals and groups from in and around the parish to come along and express their opinion on what could be done with this property to help create a visitor attraction for the area. We would love to hear everybody’s ideas. Our February draw will also take place at the meeting.
Agricultural Show: A meeting of Granard Agricultural Show will take place on Thursday night 7 March at 9pm in J.V. Donohoe’s Lounge to discuss sale of tickets and preparation for Card Drive the next night in J.V.’s at 9pm with proceeds in aid of our 2013 show. Please note meeting on Thursday night instead of usual Wednesday nights.

St. Mary’s GAA: The eagerly awaited launch of St. Mary’s GAA History Book takes place in the Clubhouse Higginstown Granard on Friday 15 March at 7.00pm. This book chronicles 125 years of Granard GAA since it’s formation in 1888 to the present day and in fact was the first GAA Club to be established in Co. Longford. Everyone welcome to attend.
Tribute to Bobby Burns: A tribute to the late Bobby Burns in C.D. and photographic memories has been produced by Frank Kilbride. The production includes the commentary on the 1966 National League final as well as the Tribute composed by Fr. Coleman Carrigy that he recited on the day of Bobby’s funeral. Also included is the song The Boys in Blue and gold together with various interviews. This is a must for all G.A.A. enthusiasts. The recordings were mastered at Spout Studios Granard. Make of Wish Foundation: Bank of Ireland are proud to be sponsors of the Make a Wish Foundation Charity again this year and on a local level the staff of Bank of Ireland in Granard are hosting a coffee morning on Friday 8 March where they will be selling cakes/buns/muffins and tea and coffee. There will also be cake cutters and beautiful aprons for sale for budding bakers. This is a chance for staff and customers to have a cup of tea together and more importantly to raise much needed funds to help this charity who are helping to make dreams come true for children all across the country who are in heartbreaking circumstances. Any support that you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Easter Festival: Plans are now at an advanced stage for the Easter Festival on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st March. The festival kicks off on Saturday afternoon at 3pm with a gruelling 5K Run which starts at Kiernan Milling! Entry is 10 per adult and 5 for U16 participants. Prizes are as follows 1st 200, 2nd 100 and 3rd 50. There will be a special prize of 50 for the first U16 competitor across the finish line. If you wish to participate call Patrick on 043 6687935. Later in the evening at 4.30, the Novelty Tug-O-War will take place on Main Street. All businesses in the area are invited to enter a team of 7 people. The cost is 20 per team. On Sunday from 1pm onwards, there will be lots of fabulous entertainment for children and adults including fire eating, stilt walking and unicyclist from Corvenieos Entertainment. The crowd are in for a very special treat with the appearance of the “Trialstar Team” - the very best of mototcycle arena trials specialists performing amazing feats of bravery. The parade is expected to pass through Main St. at 2pm. Many floats have entered, but there is still time to join up if you wish to do so call Patrick on 043 6687935. There will be an Artisan Food & Craft Fare boasting an array of home baking including cheese, meats, boxty, jams, apple pies, crepes and confectionary so all palettes will be catered for. After the parade Shindig – formerly known as the Merchant Archers, will take to the stage followed by popular local group Paper Planes! As it is Easter Sunday there’ll be lots of Easter Eggs to give away!! Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the fun! With such a variety of live entertainment there is something for everyone at the Easter Festival in Granard!

G.A.A. Race Day: The annual Race Day organised by Longford G.A.A. at Punchestown Races was launched last week in Aras Ui Bhrian Longford. The date is set for Wednesday 24 April – Gold Cup Day. Sponsors again this year are RSM Farrell Grant Sparks. This is the 11th year of the event which has become one of the largest corporate events at Punchestown.
Rose of Tralee: The search is on for the Longford Rose for the annual Festival in Tralee that will take place on 19 and 20 August. Organisations and groups in Co. Longford are encouraged to enter a contestant for the Longford Rose which is to take place in the Longford Arms on Saturday 27 April next.
New Adult Karate Class: Due to the huge success of the children’s karate class at the Canon Kelly Memorial Hall Granard a new Adult class has started due to popular demand. Wednesday 6-7pm. Easter Festival: On Easter weekend – Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March, all roads will lead to Granard for the Easter Festival! An exciting schedule of events is planned for the weekend including a 5K Run, Novelty Tug-O-War, Easter Egg Hunt, Parade, Artisan Food Fare, live music and lots of children’s entertainment!
