Mass will be celebrated in the new Cemetery at Granardkille on this Sunday, 26 July at 1.00pm and in Granardkille old cemetery on Sunday, 2 August at 11.30am. Please help to have our Cemeteries looking well. There are many people laid to rest in Granardkille Cemetery who have no family members left to care for their graves. Perhaps people could give a helping hand to tidy and maintain these graves.
Cemetery Sunday takes place in Abbeylara on this Sunday, 26 July with Mass (weather permitting) in the cemetery at 11.00am. Everyone encouraged to tidy up their graves.
The Co. Longford Senior Championship kindly sponsored by Peter Hanley Motors commenced last week end with all the local clubs being successful: Abbeylara, St. Mary’s Granard and St. Columba’s Mullinalaghta. The draw for the second rounds took place on Sunday evening and the big local derby sees St. Mary’s play Abbeylara on Friday evening in Devine Park Edgeworthstown at 7.45pm. St. Columba’s Mullinalaghta play Carrickedmond in their second round. Wishing all teams the best of luck.
A special Whist Drive will be held on this Sunday night at 8.30pm in the Community Centre. One of our regular players Mrs Ann Byrne from Ardagh is celebrating her 100th Birthday and we congratulate her. All proceeds from the night will go to Muscular Dystrophy Ireland. The Greville Arms Golf Society played their fourth outing of the year in Moate Golf Club. 22 players played on the day. The course was in good condition and there was good weather. The results are as follows: Nearest to pin - Sean Flood. Longest drive - Martin Murray. Team - Martin Murray, Joe McElvaney and Tom Smyth. Visitors prize - Frank Tighe. Category B winner - Sean Flood. 2nd overall - Kevin Tighe. 1st overall - Martin Murray. Congratulations to Kevin Tighe on winning the County Longford Golf Club captain’s prize.

St. Patrick’s N.S. Killeen will hold a 50th anniversary celebration on Sunday 27 September. A book is being compiled to commemorate this event. We are seeking old photos and stories that people wish to share and have published in this book. Photos and stories may be scanned and emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Alternatively these may be given to any committee, board or staff member or handed into McElvaney’s. Please put your name on the back of original photos so that these can be returned after they have been copied. In order to allow time for editing and publishing of the book we need all submissions by the 14 August and your support in helping make this event a success will be greatly appreciated.
Clonfin Commemoration committee are holding a 5km walk/run on Sunday 2 August next starting at McElvaney’s of Coolarty at 6.00pm. Registration will be from 5.00pm and when the walk is complete there will be a BBQ in McElvaney’s followed by an evening of Irish music song and dance. Registration is €10 per adult and €5 for children and all proceeds will go towards the Clonfin project which is ongoing at the present time. The committee will greatly appreciate your support.
The Longford I.C.A annual Craft Fair and Flower display takes place on Saturday, 25 July to coincide with the Cruthu Arts Festival in Longford. The event will be held in the Temperance Hall Longford. Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped into the Centre or to An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.

The death of John Murphy, formerly of Market Street, Granard occurred at Mullingar Regional Hospital recently. Removal took place to St. Mary’s Church for funeral Mass on Wednesday 15 July at 12 noon followed by burial in Granardkille cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his friends and neighbours.
