There was widespread sadness on news spread of the death of Mr Barney Brady, Potahee, Ballinagh. A quiet and friendly man, Barney was a highly respected member of the farming community. Deceased was known near and far for so many good reasons but in particular for involvement with Gaelic football and beagle hunting. From late autumn until the Spring Barney together with his fellow huntsmen from the famed Corduff club would spend Sundays and weekends at various locations including Urney, Bruskey, Drumcrow, Shancor, Cormore and Loughdavin where the song of the beagles providing much appreciated entertainment for the local community while Barney’s other great interest was Gaelic football. A prominent player and official of the famed Lacken club to whom he gave sterling service on and off the field of play. As a player he was a natural defender and a tower of strength in his teams defence. As his playing days came to and end he devoted his enormous talents to coaching, having a special interest in schoolboy competitions. Indeed Barney’s car being the main vehicle for conveying players to matches, his biggest success in team management came in 1967 when as trainer he guided Lacken to Intermediate championship honours. His passing is widely mourned. To his wife Kay, sons Barney and Gene, daughters Kate and Monica and relatives, I extend the sympathy of our community. The removal of the remains took place from his residence to St Michaels Church, Potahee where they were received by a guard of honour provided by Lacken Gaelic football club in the presence of hundreds of mourners while the funeral which again was of extremely large dimensions and an indication of the esteem with which the deceased and his family are held throughout the region, took place following con-celebrated mass celebrated by Rev Sean McDermott, Rev Noel Boylan and Rev Thomas McKiernan and may Barney’s soul rest in peace.
There was general regret with the news of the death of Mr Phil McGahern, Loughdavin. A kind and friendly man who was held in very high esteem by neighbours and friends, his funeral which was large and representative took place following requiem mass in St Joseph’s Church, Loughduff to the family burial ground. To his relatives and many friends, I extend the sympathy of our community. Very Rev Canon Owen Devaney PP was celebrant of the requiem mass and officiated at the graveside and may Phil’s gentle soul enjoy eternal rest.
