St. Christopher’s Services Longford will hold their annual church gate collection on this Saturday, 30th May and Sunday, 1st June. Your support would be very much appreciated.
Community games sports day will take place in Abbeylara on Monday 2nd June (Bank Holiday) at 4.00p.m. As this was a very successful year for the club at the community games we hope to see a large attendance on the day. There will be entertainment for everyone.
Bealtaine festival continues throughout May with two special events in the new library. On Tuesday, 27th May, Granard Mens group host an afternoon of music, song and chat at 2.00p.m. On Thursday, 29th May, Granard Writers Group will launch their new CD of stories, prose and poetry at 8.00p.m. Special guest Noel Monahan will be in attendance. Please note that throughout the month of May all senior citizens who join the library are given free membership.
Change of time
Weather permitting, the Vigil Mass will be celebrated in the local cemetery on Saturday, 7th June at 4.00p.m due to Longford Wexford game. Please inform family and friends away from home about change of time. All are requested to tidy their plots and to remove all rubbish.
The annual summer camp will take place in Mullinalaghta this year from Monday, 11th August to Friday, 15th August for 4 – 7 age group. 7-12 years old will be catered for from Monday18th August to Friday 22nd August. St. Columba’s G.F.C held their weekly lotto draw in The Angler’s Rest on Wednesday, 21st May. The winning numbers were 4, 5, 22, 30 with the jackpot of €5250 remaining intact. As part of their fundraising activities, the local ladies football club are holding a weekly draw based on the bonus ball in the main draw of the national lottery. Sheets are on sale in the local post office or are available from any club member. Match the bonus ball in Saturday’s night main draw and you will earn yourself €20. Lines are just €2. Six monthly tickets are available for €50 by contacting Marie Matthews. Your support would be very much appreciated each week. The winning number on Saturday May 24th was 4 with Hilda Fitzpatrick winning €20.
On Sunday next, 1st June, the Colmcille Branch of the Mentally Handicapped will hold their annual fundraising event at Dring Car Park on the shores of Lough Gowna in aid of St. Christopher’s Day Centre, Longford. For the past forty years the committee on a voluntary basis have worked tremendously to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. Unfortunately, it has to mostly depend on voluntary donations. Mass for present and deceased members will be celebrated on site at 1.30p.m. From there on entertainment for all the family will continue for three hours plus. Many of Ireland’s top artists will perform here. They include Philomena Begley, Aidan Quinn and his 6 piece Band, The Murphy’s, Noel Cassidy, Chuck Owens, Paul Lynch, June McLoughlin, Philip J Rogers, Jason McGilligan, Ciaran Rosney, Jane McNamee, David O Reilly, The Bradys, Seamus Sheridan and Frank Kilbride. As usual there will be plenty of amusements for the children such as face painting. There will also be ferret racing, cake stalls, fishing competitions with North Longford Anglers, baby show competition and much more. We remind you to mark this date in your diary.
On this Friday, 30th May, a fundraiser head shave in aid of Lauralynn House, Ireland’s only children’s hospice and St. James’s Hospital Foundation will take place in Coy’s Bar, Longford. Starting at 9.30p.m Marion Prendergast and Jo Purkis from Killoe will be shaving their heads to raise money for these very worthy charities.
