St. Christopher’s Services Longford hold their annual church gate collection on Saturday, 30 May and Sunday, 1 June, your support is greatly appreciated. 

Carra Cemetery Sunday

Cemetery Sunday takes place on Sunday, 1st June with the Rosary at 9.15a.m. followed by Holy Mass at 9.30a.m., both in the Cemetery, D. V. Memorial graveside lights are available on the way into the Cemetery. Please ensure that the grass is mowed and strimmed and that the Cemetery is clean and tidy for such an important occasion. Thanks very much to those people who have already mowed and strimmed the grass.


Thanks very much too all the people who have returned their Trócaire contributions which to date has realised €2,732. Those yet to do so are kindly requested to return their Trócaire money as soon as possible please.


Congratulations to all our young people who graduated from Cnoc Mhuire and Ardscoil Phádraig during the past week. We wish them every blessing in their Leaving Cert examinations next month and their future lives.

Holy Mass for Examinations

Holy Mass for all those young people sitting examinations in June – Junior Cert, Leaving Cert, College or any other examinations will be celebrated on Monday, 2 June in Abbeylara Church at 7.30p.m. All people are invited to come to this Mass to pray and support all those people sitting examinations.

Community Games

Community Games sports day will be held in Abbeylara this Bank holiday Monday, the 2 June at 4.00pm. We have done really well this year in the community games and we hope to see a big turnout for our sports day with something for everyone.

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.

Counselling Service

ACCORD also provides a professional marriage and relationship counselling service for couples experiencing difficulties in their marriage and relationships. ACCORD provides a safe place to explore relationship difficulties in a confidential, respectful and non-judgemental setting.

Cycle and Climb

The 4th Annual Glenn Brady Memorial Cycle and Climb from Longford to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sunday June 1st. This is a very enjoyable and rewarding challenge, setting off from Longford at 4.30am to complete the 147km cycle and then take on the 3.5hour climb of Croagh Patrick. The popularity of this event has grown massively since it began in 2011 and 2014 will be bigger than ever. So there’s plenty of time to get the training in over the coming weeks. The next First Friday/Saturday Reparation and Adoration vigil to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary is in the Chapel of Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown on Friday the 6 June commencing at 10.00pm with the Holy Rosary and Confession.

Community Library

On Thursday May 29 at 8pm Granard Writers Group launches their new CD of stories, prose, and poetry with special guest Noel Monahan. Please note that throughout the month of May all senior citizens who join the library are given free library membership.

Walking Club

No walking Bank Holiday Monday, we will resume on Monday 9 June, meeting as usual at Higginstown Sports Complex @7.00pm.  We will start our away walks that evening and head to Derrycassin Woods, looking forward to seeing all our old and new members out, everyone welcome. 

Siopa Lus na Greine

Drop in your cast offs, bric -a - brac to us at the Siopa or to the Centre, everything accepted and welcomed.  New stock arriving weekly, ladies, gents and children’s clothes, and all sizes catered for. Huge bargains on our €1 children’s rail. Jewellery to finish off any outfit, also shoes and sandals. All Books 50c each.  Due to popular demand we are now open Thursday, Friday & Saturday, 10am to 5pm. All proceeds from the shop go directly to projects in the community.

Field Day

Abbeylara Field Day takes place on Sunday, June 8 where there will be lots of fabulous entertainment for children and adults which include the following: Steam Trashing Demonstration, Tractor Pulling, Pony and Trap Rides, Car Boot Sales, Egg and Spoon Races, 3 Legged Race, Tug-of-War for ladies and gents, Midget Car Racing, Bouncing Castles which are free to all Children, Vintage Tractors, a Dog Show with different Categories, and Bumping Car Rides. There will be also be a trophie for the best dressed Lady and Gent. There will food stalls and stands on the day boasting an array of home baking so all palettes will be catered for. There will also be music on the day. There will be free parking on the day and disabled parking close to the enterance of the field (Permit Holders Only). Admission on the day is €10 and children are free. All proceeds are in aid of our Parish Funds, therefore your support would be very much appreciated. Head Shave

A Fundraiser Head Shave will take place on 30 May in Coy’s Bar, Longford, starting at 9.30pm in aid of Lauralynn House, Ireland’s only Children’s Hospice and St. James’s Hospital Foundation. Marion Prendergast and Jo Purkis from Killoe will be shaving their heads to raise money for these very worthy charities.

The yearly tickets for Abbeylara GAA Club Lotto are now on sale around our parish. To purchase your ticket contact any of the players please. Your yearly ticket fully paid gives you entry into 52 weekly Lotto draws, which mostly takes place on Thursday nights, alternating between Crawford’s and The Mill tavern. There will also be 5 x €100 prizes at the first Lotto draw on Thursday, 29 May. Open Air Festival

On Sunday 1st June the Colmcille Branch of the Mentally Handicapped will hold their annual fundraising event at Dring Car Park on the shores of Lough Gowna in aid of St. Christopher’s Day Centre, Battery Road, Longford. We remind you to mark this date in your diary, as your support would be very much appreciated.

Tidy Towns

Our village is now starting to look its best, if only we can keep it that way. There’s a lot done and a lot to do, with a litter pick up every week. It is most important to pick up that one small sweet wrapper. One wrapper and we lose points, so be on the alert. Also the bottle bin area, bin it or take it home.

Bealtaine Tea Party

The Abbeylara Active Retirement Committee would like to thank everybody who came along to their party on Sunday last.  We had a lovely afternoon of entertainment with singing, poem recital, recitations, and finished off with everyone dancing to sing-along and music.  We would like to thank the Board of Management of St. Bernard’s National School for the use of their School Hall, and to Tom Joe for the PA System.

Ardscoil Phádraig, Granard are currently enrolling for FETAC Level 5 Courses in Sports and Recreation, Childcare, Nursing Studies, Agriculture Business, Information Technology and Animal Care. These FETAC Level 5 Courses are suitable for both school leavers and mature students who wish to return to education and gain new skills or employment. They also provide links to certain courses in Universities and Institutes of Technology and can be worth up to 400 points.
