St. Christopher’s Services Longford will hold their annual Church gate collection on Saturday, 30th May and Sunday, 1st June. Your support as always will be greatly appreciated.
Granard Tidy Towns are having a general clean up on Bank Holiday Monday, 2 June at 10am, meeting at the Community Centre. Judging in the Nation Tidy Towns award will be commencing soon and we are asking all local clubs/organizations to come along to help us improve our town.
Last Tuesday, 20 May, saw the final meeting and demise of Granard Town Council. The meeting took place in the newly refurbished Granard Library building. This was the first and last meeting of the Town Council in the new facility. Mayor Maura Kilbride Harkin chaired what was a very nostalgic and sad occasion for the Councillors and indeed the people of Granard town.

It would be beneficial if individuals and groups in the area could log events so as to avoid duplication. Rath Mhuire & Dolmen Services Ltd.
A most successful and enjoyable concert organised by the group took place in St. Mary’s Churc, Granard on Sunday night last. Thanks to all who supported the event and to all the artists who took part. All proceeds to towards the running of the facilities. Further report next week.
The service continues at the offices of Granard Area Action Group each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. If you require information on any aspects of your rights and entitlements please call in and the Information Officer will deal confidentially with your query. The service is free to all.
The final meeting before the Summer recess takes place on Thursday next, 5 June in the Credit Union meeting room at 8pm. All members are encouraged to come along and new ones will be most welcome.
Congratulations to Fiona Macken, Panache Health & Beauty Centre, Main Street, Granard who celebrated 10 years in business last week. On Thursday, 22 May an open evening took place at the centre with refreshments and lots of giveaways for the large attendance. We wish Fiona continued success and many more successful years in business.
Greville Golf Society
The ‘Colgate Smile’ told it’s own story as our captain Jimmy Leavy led from the front through sunshine and hail to win the Spring Cup in a tough but fair Esker Hills, finishing with a fantastic score of 38 points. Overall winner - Jimmy Leavy, Runner-up - Martin Sheridan, 19-plus - Pat Monaghan, Longest Drive - John O’Hara, Team - Colm Fagan, John O’Hara, Mick Murray. Big thank you to Jimmy for his wonderful display of inscribed trophies and all who stayed on for presentation. Next outing is on Sunday, 8th June in Knightsbrook, Trim. Tee-off at 10.30am. Visitors are welcome! Well done to our members Kevin Tighe, Ned Monoghan, Martin Sheridan and Mick Murray on winning the Longford Golf Classic, in which over 80 teams took part.
Congratulations to Holly Flynn, Ballymacroley who came second in the online Mathletes Competition National Final in Dublin on Saturday last. Holly was competing against finalists from all over the country and worked diligently to achieve second place. Holly is a 5th class student from St. Guasacht’ National School, Bunlahy and is a credit to her school and a worthy representative for her county. Well done, Holly!
Congratulations to all the students from our two local secondary schools, Chnoc Mhuire and Ard Scoil Phadraigh who held their graduation ceremonies last week. We wish them all every success in their examinations and in their future chosen careers.

Longford County Fleadh
Congratulations to Kacey Shields, Coolarty on winning 1st place in the U-10 Traditional Singing competition at this year’s County Mini-Fleadh which took place on Saturday, 10th May in Edgeworthstown. Congratulations too, to all the other participants in the Granard area who took part in competitions in the Mini-Fleadh on Saturday and the Senior Fleadh on Sunday, 11 May.
Abbeylara Field Day
The annual Field Day will take place on Sunday, 8 June with the usual Tractor Pulling events; Vintage car displays; Threshing Demonstration; Midget Car Racing in association with Motorsport Ireland; Ladies and Gents Tug ‘O’War; Best dressed lady competition; Fun Fair and many other side shows. On this Thursday, May 29 at 8pm. Granard Writers Group launch their new CD of stories, prose and poetry with special guest Noel Monahan. Please note that throughout the month of May all senior citizens who join the library are given free membership.
Pitch & Putt
Competitions continue on Wednesday evenings for all members – adults and juveniles and new beginners at 7.00pm. Those competitions will continue for the rest of the Summer months weather permitting. St Mary’s G.A.A. will be holding an Auction in Higginstown on the 22 June to raise funds for the running of the club and teams from U8 to senior level. We are requesting all our players, members, supporters, friends and anyone else who wishes, to donate any items they are no longer want or use to our club. We will auction off these items on the 22 June with all proceeds going to help with the running expenses. A number of items have already been promised, like furniture, pictures, plants, books, CD’s, garden equipment etc. Items like bed linen and mattresses can not be accepted. Anyone interested in donating anything for this auction can contact any member of our club with details of the item or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org . More information will be made available on club’s Facebook page, notice board in the clubhouse and posters placed around the area.
A fundraiser Head Shave will take place on this Friday night, 30 May in Coy’s Bar, Longford starting at 9.30pm in aid of Lauralynn House, Ireland’s only Children’s Hospice and St. James’s Hospital Foundation. Marion Prendergast and Jo Purkis from Killoe will be shaving their heads to raise money for these very worthy charities.
The next First Friday/Saturday Reparation and Adoration vigil to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary is in the Chapel of Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown on Friday the 6th June commencing at 10 pm with the Rosary and confession.
Siopa Lus na Greine
Drop in your cast offs, bric-a-brac to us at the Siopa or to the Centre, everything accepted and welcomed. New stock arriving weekly, ladies, gents and children’s, all sizes. Beautiful jewellery to finish off that special outfit also shoes and sandals. Books clearing at 50 cent each. Due to popular demand the shop is now open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am to 5pm. All proceeds from the shop go directly and totally to projects within the community.
No walking Bank Holiday Monday but we will resume again on Monday, 9 June, meeting as usual at Higginstown Sports Complex at 7pm. We will start off our away walks on that Monday and head to Derrycassan Woods. Looking forward to seeing all our walkers out old and new everyone welcome.
Annual Cycle & Climb
The 4th Annual Glenn Brady Memorial Cycle and Climb from Longford to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sunday, June 1st. This is a very enjoyable and rewarding challenge. Setting off from Longford at 4:30am to complete the 147km cycle and then take on the 3.5 hour climb of Croagh Patrick. The popularity of this event has grown massively since it began in 2011, and 2014 will be bigger than ever. Register now at www.glennbradycycle.com.
Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard at 8.45pm. Proceeds go to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated. Jackpot this week is €15,800.

The annual Festival at Dring organised by the local group of the Mentally Handicapped Association takes place on Sunday 1 June. This is the 40th year of the event so there will be special celebrations with an exciting line up. The day commences with celebration of Mass at 1.30pm for present and deceased members of the association the homily will be will be delivered by Bishop Emeritus of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise Bishop Colm O’Reilly. Teas stall available on site. Raffle for valuable prizes.
The Parents Association of St. Patrick’s N.S. Killeen are holding a 5K walk/run fundraiser on Sunday, 15 June at 12pm. Starting from McElvaney’s Pub Coolarty. Registration will take place at McElvaney’s from 10.30am. Cost €10 per adult. €5 per child or €20 per family. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
An information evening and registration opportunity for young people who are currently in First Year of Second level education will take place on this Thursday 29 May at Lus na Greine FRC at 7.30pm.
