Garda Barracks temporarily closed
Ballymahon Garda Station will be closed for approximately six weeks to allow for upgrading works on the premises. This work commenced on Monday last 19th May. During this time, our Gardai will operate from Lanesboro Garda Station. If however, you need say, a Passport form signed or have any concerns the Gardai will be present at Bridgeways Resource Centre, across from St. Matthews Church on two days a week, Mondays and Fridays from 2pm to 4pm.
Inny Kayakers Open Day
Would you like to try kayaking? Then go along to their free event on Saturday 7th June anytime between 11a.m. and 3p.m. Have a look around the Clubhouse, see what they are all about. If you would like, they will then take you on a short trip down the river Inny. BBQ on the day too. You will find them beside the Bridge in Ballymahon. Please bring a change of clothes if you want to go on the river. Juniors from 10 years old and must have parent or guardian with them. Fundraiser Head Shave
Will take place on 30th May in Coy’s Bar, Longford, starting at 9.30p.m. in aid of Lauralynn House, Ireland’s only Childrens Hospice and St. James Hospital Foundation. Marian Prendergast and Jo Purkis from Killoe will be shaving their heads to raise money for these very worthy charities.

Death of Fergus Smith
We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the nieces, nephew, relatives and friends of Fergus Smith, Loughill, Kenagh who passed away on 16th May last. May God grant rest to his Soul.
Will have a final rehearsal tonight, Wednesday, 28th May at the usual time of 8.00p.m. in Skellys. A full attendance is requested as the group will be performing at the Opening of the Goldsmith International Literary Festival this weekend. We wish them all the best at this event in The Rustic Inn, Abbeyshrule on Friday night at 8pm.

Cemetery Sunday at Shrule
As many people have to make travel plans to be here for Cemetery Sunday, please note that this year it will take place on Sunday 13th July. Great credit is due to the Cemetery Committee who have been doing the fine work of maintaining the cemeteries for the past few years and who have already begun to some of that work this year.
Will be held in Cloncallow at 5.30pm on Sunday, 22nd June next. And at Forgney Cemetery at 7pm on the same evening.

St. Peter & Paul’s Parish, Athlone has issued an invitation to Come and See, which are a series of talks in St. Peter & Paul’s Church, Athlone every Saturday evening after the 6.30p.m. Mass, this commenced on 3rd May for seven weeks. Speakers include Fr. Pat Collins CM, Mr. Eddie Stone, Ms Marie Beirne, Msgr Pat Lynch, Mr. Don Devaney, Ms Miriam McGowan, Canon Liam Devine.
Death of Joseph Bigley
It was with deep regret that we learnt of the death on Friday last, 23rd May of Mr Joseph Bigley, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Tonagh, Glasson, Athlone. Joe was a quiet, inoffensive gentleman, a very popular member of the local farming community, a man who was always ready to give a helping hand to his neighbours and friends. Joe’s remains were laid to rest at Benown cemetery following his Funeral Service in the adjoining Benown parish church on Sunday afternoon last. We extend our deepest sympathy to Joe’s wife, Daphne (nee Crooke), his sons, Alan and George, daughters Ethel and Helen, his grandchildren Philip and Laura, and all his family, neighbours and many friends. May he rest in peace.
Goldsmith Summer School
The 30th Annual Goldsmith International Literary Festival takes place this weekend from 30th May to 1st June with the Theme: Pallas, Inniskeen, Mossbawn, the Importance and Significance of Birthplace in influencing the works of Goldsmith, Kavanagh and Heaney. Under the Chairmanship of Festival Chairman, Seamus McCormack, the official opening on the 30th May will be performed by Professor Andrew Carpenter, Emeritus Professor of English at U.C.D. just as he did in Abbeyshrule 30 years ago when the first Festival started. This will be preceeded at 8.00p.m. by a Recital from the local Innyside Singers. Saturday’s events commence with the popular Tour at 11.00a.m. beginning in Ballymahon, going through Pallas, Forgney, The Three Jolly Pigeons, the Parsonage, Kilkenny West and will include readings from Goldsmiths works. The Goldsmith room in Ballymahon Library is the venue for talks on Saturday afternoon with speakers Dr. Fergus O’Ferrall and also poet and playwright Noel Monahan. The evening will be rounded off with the Goldsmith Barbecue, a popular evening of musical entertainment at the Three Jolly Pigeons pub in Tang. On Sunday, we have the third annual Goldsmith Miscellany chaired by William Dowler and will feature a number of short talks interspersed with music and poetry and this will be held in the Goldsmith room in the Library. The final event at 3.30p.m. on Sunday afternoon is the Poetry reading at Pallas, with the results of the childrens and adults poetry competition organised under the aegis of the festival and adjudicated upon by poet, Noel Monahan. These poetry competitions have received an extremely high quality entry from all over Ireland while the children’s poetry competition will once again feature poetry from the children of primary schools in Goldsmith Country. A series of one-day retreats will take place on the pilgrimage island in Lough Derg during the months of May, August and September. These guided days of prayer and reflection include Prayers of Intercession and Healing of Memories as well as the Sacrament of Reconciliation and celebration of the Eucharist. Credit Union Scholarship
Ballymahon Credit Union Scholarship is open to Leaving Certificate students attending Ballymahon V ocational school or Mercy Secondary School. All students who wish to enter the draw must be a member of the Credit Union on or before 31st May 2014. Applicants must be commencing a FAS apprenticeship or a full-time certificate, diploma or degree course at any university, institute of technology or approved third level college. The scholarship will be paid at a rate of €1,000 per annum for a maximum of three years. Further details are available from the office of Ballymahon & District Credit Union.
Local election success
