Your prayers are requested for the happy repose of the soul of Frank Brady, Barraghmore, Drumlish, Longford/Granard Co. Longford who died on Saturday, 8 March. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Cyber Bullying

The Parent Association of St. Bernard’s N.S would like to thank all those who came to our recent information night on Cyber Bullying/Internet Safety. We also thank Paula O’Connor for her informative presentation she certainly captured our attention!! 

Gun Club

Abbeylara Gun Club will have a meeting in the Shooting Grounds, Derragh next Thursday night, 20 March at 9pm. All members please attend.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Cnoc Mhuire Secondary School, in winning the Leinster U-14 School’s Final on Tuesday last in Stradbally. Special mention to Abbeylara lads, P.J Masterson, (Captain), Reece Reilly and Ronan Lynch. They beat Wexford C.B.S. on a score line of 3-3 to 3-16. Well done to all the lads and their manager Mr. Carroll.

Field Day

Abbeylara Field Day Committee are holding a meeting on Thursday, 20 March at 8pm in the Handball Centre. All members and anyone wishing to help out please attend as lots of help is needed and new ideas are most welcome as we are trying to keep this event going on an annual basis. Your support would be very much appreciated!!

Active Retirement

Longford Toastmasters

Would you like to be more confident at speaking in public and to learn how to improve your communication skills? Longford Toastmasters are looking for new members to join our club. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from September to May in Kelleher’s from 8.20pm until 10.30pm. Admission is €5 with free admission to first time visitors. Monster Bingo

A Monster Bingo will be held in Streete Parish Park Centre, Lismacaffrey, on Sunday next, 23 March at 3.00pm. €4000 in prize money must be won. Proceeds are in aid of Granard Visitor Centre Project. Your support will be most welcome.

5K Road Race/Fun Run

Castletown- Finea, Coole Whitehall GFC are holding a 5K Road Race and Fun Run on Sunday, 23 March at 12 noon. The event is AAI approved and fully insured and is a full road course. Times will be published on Facebook after the event. Prizes for many categories including Seniors, Juniors, Over 40’s, Over 50’s and U-12 National School Children. There will be special group for children walking the route, fully supervised with two stewards. Refreshments will be served in Fitzsimons Bar following the event. Solemn Novena

A Solemn Novena in honour of Our Lady of Perpetual Help continues at the Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott on Tuesday evenings beginning at 7.30pm with the Rosary followed by Novena Prayers and Mass at 8.00pm. Concert

A fundraising Concert will take place on Wednesday, 9 April in Crover House Hotel, Mountnugent at 8.30 p.m. with Mick Flavin and his Band. Proceeds go towards the maintenance of Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott. There will be a door prize -pilgrimage for one person to Medjugorje. Tickets are available from the Abbey Office, Crover House Hotel and Multisound. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Abbeylara Club Membership for 2014 can now be paid to Kevin Murphy, Carra, at your convenience, please, as follows: €50 adult players, includes membership and insurance; €35 student players includes membership and insurance; €25 adults. €40 per couple, €10 non-playing students and €10 OAP.

Bingo

Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre, Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot is now €14,800. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early. IT COULD BE YOU!

Friendly Phone Call Service

This Friendly Phone Call Service is a free service for older people, providing information on local activities and services as well as an opportunity for a friendly chat. If you are feeling lonely or isolated and you would like someone to talk to, this is for you. The service can be reached at 043 3349678 on Monday to Thursday from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

County Longford Rural Transport “door to door” services in your area have spaces available for any passengers who wish to travel to their local Town or Village. To maintain the Local service in your area, including “link” services, more service users are required and All Age Groups are very welcome to travel. Youth Programmes

Lus Na Greine is seeking volunteers for their new Foroige Club, which will commence in May. Leadership and other training provided. Cool girls Club: Every Tuesday from 4.30 – 6.00pm. Boys Zone: Thursday’s from 4.30pm to 6.00pm. All boys and girls aged 9 and up are most welcome.

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Line Dancing

The Breffni Kickers Line Dancing Classes continue each Thursday night in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva with beginners at 8.30pm followed by the more advanced at 9.30pm. Come along and enjoy a night of dancing and exercise in a friendly environment.

Fundraiser

A sponsored head shave will take place on Saturday, 22 March in the Stag’s Head, Ballinalee in aid of St. John’s Ward, Crumlin. A Monster Draw will be held on the night. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Saint Vincent de Paul celebrations

Later this month St. Vincent de Paul in Granard will celebrate its first anniversary. To mark the occasion, a very special sale will take place at the organisation’s shop on the town’s Market Street – New2U – on Saturday 29 march from 11.00am. More details about the anniversary celebrations will be available shortly. The “New To U” shop on Market Street, is opened every Friday from 10.00 am to 5.00pm and on Saturdays from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm. A 2014 Diary is available at Granard Area Action Group office to enable local voluntary groups and fundraising events to log their forthcoming activities for the year so as to help co-ordinate events successfully and to avoid duplication where possible. Adult Badminton

Badminton takes place on Monday Nights from 8pm to 10pm in the Canon Kelly Community Hall, Granard behind Ardscoil Phádraig. Keep fit and have fun for only €3. Rackets and Shuttles are provided, 4 playing courts. For further details contact William on 086 8226523.

Easter Festival

Plans are in place for Granard’s Easter Festival on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April. The festival kicks off on Saturday morning at 11am with a historical walk of Granard led by local historian Jimmy Donohoe. Jimmy’s tour is both very enjoyable and informative as he holds a wealth of knowledge about Granard’s history! On Saturday afternoon at 3pm the gruelling 5K Walk/Jog/Run will start at Kiernan Milling! Entry is €10 per adult and €5 for U16 participants. Prizes are as follows Men 1st €100, 2nd €50, 3rd €25, 1st u16 Ladies 1st €100, 2nd €50, 3rd €25 1st u16. Registration will take place from 2pm at Kiernan Milling. All walkers, joggers and elite runners are welcome. For more information call Patrick on 043 6687935. Later in the evening, the Novelty Tug-o-War will take place on Main Street. All businesses in the area are invited to enter a team of 7 people. The cost is €20 per team. If your business or organisation would like to enter a team please contact Barry on 087 7625698. On Easter Sunday from 2pm onwards, there will be lots of fabulous entertainment for children and adults including fire eating, stilt walking and unicyclist from Corvenieo’s Entertainment. There will also be face painting and balloon modelling. The parade is expected to pass through Main St. at 2.30pm. Many floats have entered, but, there is still time to join up if you wish to do so call Patrick on 043 6687935. The Madagascar circus will be in Granard after the parade with appearances by Marty the dancing Zebra, Alex the friendly Lion and Melman the hypochondriac Giraffe! Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the fun! With such a variety of free, live entertainment there is something for everyone at the Easter Festival in Granard!

Social Dancing

Social Dancing has commenced on Sunday nights in the Stag’s Head, Ballinalee from 9.30pm. No cover charge and take your pick on the night. A great night is guaranteed so come along and dance the night away!
