Happy New Year

I would like to wish all the readers of these notes at home and abroad a very happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year. Thanks to everyone who contributed to these notes every week by phone, email or text. Your support is greatly appreciated.


Your prayers are requested for the happy repose of the soul of Kieran Keegan, Main St. Granard, who died on Friday, 3 January, peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dublin Road, Longford. He is sadly missed by his sister Bridget, sister-in-law Trudi, nephews, Mark and James, relatives, neighbours and friends. May he rest in peace.


We welcome into the Christian Community, Caoileann Siún, daughter of Paul and Siobhán Brady, Springtown.


Congratulations to Annette Drake, Kinkillew and John Kiernan, Kiltyreher, Carriglass, Longford who were married on Tuesday, 31 December 2013 in Abbeylara Church and to David Feely, Ballinacross and Tracy Mulvey, Ferriskill, Granard who were married on Friday 3 January 2014 in Granard Church.

Gun Club

Blood Donor Clinic

Takes place on Monday, 13 January and Tuesday, 14 January from 5.00pm to 8.30pm in St. Brigid’s Community Centre, Loch Gowna. The Granard branch have their shop “New To U” shop on Market Street, opened every Friday from 10.00 am to 5.00pm and on Saturdays from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm. Adult Badminton

The above takes place on Monday Nights from 8pm to 10pm in the Canon Kelly Community Hall, Granard behind Ardscoil Phádraig. Keep fit and have fun for only €3. Rackets and Shuttles are provided, 4 playing courts. For further details contact William on 086 8226523

Cilleo Yew Tree

Cilleo Yew Tree players will put on an extra performance of “Stolen Child “on January 12 at 8.30pm in Ennybegs Community Centre in aid of Alzheimer’s and Motor Neurone disease. The two act play enjoyed a successful three night run in late November/early December attracting full houses.

GAA Bingo

Bingo on Wednesday night in Community Centre, Granard.  This week’s Jackpot is €13,800. It could be you. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early, eyes down 8.45p.m.

Charity Event

The Irish Cancer Society and Longford Hospice Donations amounted to over €1,400. Many thanks for your outstanding support. The Fund will remain open for a further 2–3 weeks. Any donations please forward to Mary O’Connor, Carragh. A pair of glasses was found after the event, available from above named.

Tidy Towns

We would like to wish a very happy New Year to all the residents of Abbeylara and surrounding area.  We will be hoping to do better in the competition this year.  To get good marks it takes a joint effort from all committee members and the local residents.  Planning has to start straight away as things don’t happen overnight.  We would like to thank the Community Employment and Tus workers for all their efforts in keeping our village tidy.  We are starting the Bonus Ball next weekend; numbers are for sale at P. J. and Maggie Farrell’s shop.  We would like to thank P. J. & Maggie for their help with the Bonus Ball in 2013. More information next week. Due to renovations Granard Branch Library has relocated to Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at Barrack Street, Granard. It will operate each Friday from 10.00am to 5.00pm. For further information call 087 6151028 on any Friday.

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Community Diary

A Diary is available at Granard Area Action Group office to enable local voluntary groups and fundraising events to log their forthcoming activities for the year so as to help co-ordinate events successfully and to avoid duplication where possible.

Sinn Fein

The launch of the John Reilly election campaign will be held in Aughnacliff Community Centre tonight, Wednesday, January 8 at 8.00pm. Everyone is welcome.
