It is hoped that a balanced representation of people from all areas of the parish will consider allowing their names to go forward for consideration, so that the good work that has been done can continue while, at the same time look at any new possibilities going forward.

New year

The writer wishes all a peaceful and successful 2014, and the notes which again this year were a bit mixed up over the festive season will be back to normal hopefully for the months and weeks ahead. Apologies for any omissions.

Wildlife Club

The club thanks everyone who took part in the final of the clubs Christmas league clay shoot which was held on the 19th December last, and well-done to 30 prize winner’s on the night with the overall high gun been won by Martin Burke from Legan. We also thank all the club members who sponsored prizes on the night, with a special word of thanks to Michael Murtagh and Tommy Denning who sponsored the two hampers. On the 29th December last the 4th round in the County Longford winter clay shooting league was held in the club grounds and once again we had over 50 shooters taking part. On behalf of the club we offer our sympathy to the Noonan family and the Oram family, Coolnagun who had family bereavements recently.

The Christmas doubles competition for the Raymond Murphy Shield was played on the 17th. December. The semi-finals consisted of the following pairs - Mick Murray and Catherine Costello v Pat Kelly and Kieran Fahy. On the other mat Michael Turner and Rachel Gaffney competed against Jimmy Leavy and Hughie Owens. Three of the eight players are new members. Pat and Kieran went on to play Michael and Rachel in the final. This was a nail biting final with Michael and Rachel taking an early lead only to be overtaken at the eighth end but in the ninth end Michael and Rachel just got there in a photo finish. The Raymond Murphy shield was presented to the winning pair by Dympna and Pauline Murphy. The bowls club wish to sympathise with Marie Delamere on the recent death of her son Declan. May he rest in peace. New members are always welcome so why not make a New Year’s resolution to join this active club. Finally a happy and prosperous New Year to all our bowlers and their families.

Boherquill Ramblers

For their last walk of 2013, on December 29th, the Ramblers held a walk in aid of the Edgeworthstown branch of St. Christopher’s Services for the intellectually disabled. The Ramblers and others braved the showery weather during the loop walk around Boherquill to give their support to St. Christopher’s and were treated to tea, biscuits and a raffle in Streete Parish Park afterwards. The Ramblers walk on Sunday January 12th will follow the Royal Canal west from Mullingar. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet in Mullingar at 2pm at the car park beside the Fire Station. All Ramblers are wished a Happy and Healthy New Year.
