An important meeting of Granard Motte Community Enterprise (GMCE Ltd) will take place on Tuesday next 27 August at 8.30pm in the Community Centre Granard. Our project is now at a vital stage and some very important decisions must now be made. We would encourage all those with an interest in the future prosperity of our town and the surrounding area to please attend.
Ardscoil Phádraig Granard is currently enrolling for FETAC Level 5 courses in Animal Care and Nursing Studies. These FETAC Level 5 courses are suitable for both school leavers and mature students who wish to return to education and gain new skills or employment. They also provide links to certain courses in Universities and Institutes of Technology and can be worth up to 400 points. Students may be eligible for further education grants and be able to retain their social welfare benefits subject to usual conditions. The ordination of Father Francis Duffy to the Episcopate takes place on Sunday 6 October in St. Mary’s Athlone at 3 p.m. More details in the coming weeks.
Pilgrimage to Knock
The annual pilgrimage will take place on Sunday 1st September led by Bishop Colm O’Reilly for his final time as Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise. Ceremonies begin at 2.30p.m.
A new series of classes commence on Tuesday 9 September in Edgeworthstown Community Centre. Beginners and Intermediate at 7.30pm. Intermediate and Advanced class at 8.30pm. Cost €65 for 6 week programme.
Longford Westmeath ETB
The above formerly board the VEC is now offering Advanced Certificate in Business FETAC Level 6 (part time). This course is provided FREE under BTEI (Back to Education Initiative) and is particularly suitable to unemployed people who have already worked in a supervisory capacity. This year’s Longford Marathon event takes place over the weekend and on Sunday 25 August the marathon itself will take place once again it is sponsored by local business Pat the Baker. The unexpected death of Frank Smith, affectionately known as Bunty occurred at his residence at St. Joseph’s Tce, The Hill, Granard on Thursday 14 August. Removal took place from Finnegan’s Funeral Home, Cavan on Saturday morning to St. Mary’s Church, Granard for funeral Mass at 11am, followed by burial in Granardkille old cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and all the family circle.
The untimely death of Jonathan McCarthy, former member of the teaching staff at Cnoc Mhuire, Granard and native of High Street, Headford, Co. Galway occurred last week. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday 15 August. A large number of staff and pupils from the school travelled to Headford for the obsequies. Sympathy is extended to his family and many friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.
The death of Bertie Kiernan, Toome, Dring occurred at Midland Hospital Tullamore on 15 August. Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Columba’s Church, Mullinalaghta on Sunday followed by burial in local cemetery.
