The recent charity auction organised by Legan Branch of St. Christopher’s was a huge success with the total proceeds amounting to in excess of €5,500. A more precise account will appear in next week’s issue. The Aurora Hall was transformed into an auction room, as 380 lots were sifted, sorted and offered for auction. Mr. Oliver Usher, of Usher Auctions, Kells, sold the last item, the chair that he was sitting on at 30 minutes after midnight after a marathon session. Incidentally, Mr. Usher provided his services free of charge. The organisers were overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of items donated. The target was 150 lots. They were equally pleased with the big turn out and eager bidding that ensued. Thanks to all who contributed those vital ingredients. Such was the level of cooperation from so many that it is impossible to single out people individually for special mention. Much work and effort went into the haulage of items to and from the hall, the painstaking checking that items were presentable and functioning, the sorting and displaying of items on the floor, the ladies who issued buyers numbers at the door, the cashiers in the office, auctioneer’s clerks, checkout and security and the providers of refreshments to the weary. Well done to one and all. Thanks to Fr. Brady for making the hall available. This turned out to be an excellent venue. Finally, the Longford Leader and Shannonside radio gave a big push in promoting the event. Footnote1: There was evidence of some on the floor wheeling and dealing after the auction. The revenue commissioners are investigating! Footnote 2: It was an eventual week for committee member Gerry Whyte who won a prestigious show jumping competition with his home bred Scooby Sleehaun, at the Connemara pony show in Clifden on Wednesday following the auction.
