The Midland Aquathon Series gets underway in Longford next Wednesday, June 19. The venue is the Dring Amenity site in Mullinalaghta.
The action gets underway at 7pm with a 750-metre swim in Lough Gowna followed by a 5k run through Derrycassin Wood.
This is the first of a four event series, which involves the triathlon clubs in Longford, Lanesborough, Athlone and the Midland Triathlon club in Mullingar.
Prizes are awarded for the club with the most points at the end of the series and there are also best overall male and female awards.
Race director, Niall Gannon and his team are busy preparing the Dring venue for the event, which will also host the club’s sprint-distance triathlon in July.
Niall says: “It’s been a lot of work to get to this point but everything is coming together thanks to the hard work of the race committee and the generous assistance of the residents in the Mullinalaghtaa area.”
Looking ahead to the series itself, Niall said he is confident that members of the Longford club can be very competitive this year: “We have over 100 members in the club this year and many of them have been training hard all winter for the triathlon season which is now underway. We can expect to see some really solid performances from both the first-timers and the more experienced members who are using the aquathon series to get ready for a sprint or longer distance triathlon in the coming months.”
Anyone who wants to take part can pay on the night. For those with a Triathlon Ireland licence the cost of entry is just €5, and for anyone without a licence the entry fee is €10.
