THANK YOU: During his recent stop smoking campaign Dermot Healy raised €2,000. A cheque for this amount was presented to Elaine Gillespie of the Irish Cancer Society at the offices of Killarney Telecoms Limited (K.T.L.), Naas. Dermot wishes to thank the following: Newtowncashel Drama Group for their kind and generous donation of €500, KTL for their donation of €700, all who supported the fundraiser in Fallon’s Pub, raising €400, family and friends who made up the balance and those who offered encouragement and advice.
ST MARY’S SCHOOL: Upgrading of the heating system at the school commences this week. The project is being funded under the Summer Works Scheme and will take four weeks.
RURAL BROADBAND: The Government Rural Broadband Scheme has been established to provide a basic broadband service to individual rural premises which cannot obtain a service from existing providers. Parishioners who wish to access broadband may complete a one-page application form without obligation. TO obtain a form log on to www.dcenr.ie or collect one from L & K’s Village shop.
PTAA: The Annual Pioneer Outing takes place on Wednesday July 20th, travelling to Armagh. In addition to Armagh City, with its two cathedrals, the tour will include Navan Fort, Eamhain Mhacha, and Loughgall, birthplace of the Orange Order. The cost is €40.00, payable when booking. This charge includes coach hire, driver/guide, morning coffee, admission to designated places of interest. It does not include lunch and dinner which are at the discretion of individuals. Contact any member of the Pioneer Committee.
TIDY TOWNS: Tidy Towns Work Evenings continue on Tuesday and Friday evenings, weather permitting. Assembly is at “The Hill”. It is hoped that every available volunteer will turn out. Unfortunately litter has become a very real problem in the Village and along the approach roads. All who frequent Newtowncashel are asked to dispose of bottles and wrappers correctly. Remember that carelessly discarded litter can bring to naught the good work of others in painting, sweeping and trimming.
TODDLER GROUP: The Toddler Group will take a two-week break until Tuesday July 26th, but will then continue through the summer months on Tuesday mornings, from 9.30 – 11.30am. Weather permitting we hope to enjoy some outdoor activities! All are welcome! Contact Yvonne (086) 851 7037 for information.
PIONEER APPEAL: The Pioneer Association is projecting a deficit of €100,000 in 2011. This is due to the decline in the Pioneer magazine circulation and other income sources. The PTAA and Central Office face closure this year unless there is an urgent injection of funds. A donation of €10 per member would raise the necessary finance. It is hoped that most members will give more. For many members this is the first time they have been asked to contribute to the Association. The Appeal has raised €615 to date in Cashel. Remittance forms, with the appeal letter on the reverse, are available in the church porches. They may be returned directly to PTAA Head Office, 27 Upper Sherrard Street, Dublin 1, or to any member of the Cashel Committee.
LEGION OF MARY: A branch of the Legion of Mary has been formed in Ballymahon. Members meet in the Sacristy of St Matthew’s Church, each Thursday evening at 7.30pm, under the spiritual direction of Fr Padraig McGowan.
