ALLEN GAELS: Congratulations to the Allen Gaels Senior team who won the Leitrim Shield Competition Final last Sunday against Carrigallen in Pairc Sean. It is the first Trophy won by the Senior team since the glory days of successive Co. Championships and credit is due to this hard working bunch of former Minors and seasoned Seniors for the comprehensive manner in which they defeated their more highly rated opponents. This welcome victory is all the more significant as the Gaels are currently propping up the League table with no victories from seven games played although several other teams are in a similar position. However the main focus on the Shield competition resulted in six straight victories for Allen Gaels on their way to Championship glory. Sunday’s good news also comes two weeks ahead of a meeting with Kiltubrid in the 1st Round of the 2011 Leitrim Senior Football Championship. A special word of congratulations to Polish national and local resident Martin Kalisz who becomes the first Pole to win a Championship medal at Senior level in the club and only the second ever to win a County Championship.

Now the next generation of Fitzgerald’s is making a name for themselves in a variety of competitive activities. Kieran’s daughter Niamh Fitzgerald won 1st prize in the Under 12 Championship at the Drumshanbo Féis recently held in the Mayflower, and in doing so beat a girl that came 4th in the Under 12 World Championships last April. Meanwhile Kieran’s seven year old son Niall looks like following in his Dad’s footsteps or should that be’ swimsteps’ when he won the Under 8 Freestyle Swimming Competition at the County Sligo Community Games Finals last week!
