THE LATE MARY SMITH - There was general regret with the news of the death of Mrs Mary Smith Knockamore Ballinagh. A member of the highly respected Sheanon family Drumavaddy Mary was born in 1912 and throughout her long life of ninty nine years endeared herself to her countless friends.
A kind and extremely helpful lady her charity in word and deed to anyone in need was well known and much appreciated. Blessed with many talents Mary excelled as an accordion player where her selections of reels jigs and hornpipes enlivened social occasions near and far. Another of Mary’s many talents was her hand writing which was of an exceptionally high standard. So much so that many letters which she had written over the years to family and friends have been retained as collectors items. At an early age Mary met the love of her life Peter Smith later the couple were married and settled down on the family farm at Knockanore Ballinagh. The death at an early age of her husband in 1950 was a heartbreaking and heavy blow for Mary who faced the task of raising her young family of five children with the family farm the only means of survival as in those days of sixty years ago handouts as we know them today were all but non existent. But hard work both in the family home and on the farm saw good results as all the family members attained high success in their chosen careers. A lady with a deep religious faith Mary’s devotion to the holy sacrifice of the Mass and to the family rosary were of the utmost importance. Blessed with a warm and friendly personality her pleasant smile endeared her to everyone. Mary enjoyed the game of bingo and would recall the occasional win, the tension of waiting for the one number etc. Her passing is widely mourned. Predeceased by her husband she is survived by her sons Patrick (Packie) and Paul , daughters Peggy Teresa and Carmel, sons in law daughters in law grandchildren great grand children nephews nieces and relatives to whom I extend the sympathy of our community. The funeral which was of extremely large dimensions and a fitting farwell to a kind and beloved resident took place following con-celebrated Mass in St Felims Church Ballinagh to the family burial ground Rev Peter McPartland PP Right Rev Monsignor Parick McManus Rev Peter Casey PP Rev Michael Quinn PP and Rev Patrick Brady Drumkilly officiated.
Sympathy is extended to Mr Michael O’Reilly Drumheel on the death of his sister Mrs Maura Lennon which occurred at an early age following a short illness.
