Community Games

Congratulations to all young people from Granard Parish who participated in the Community Games County Athletics Finals on Sunday 14th June in Ballymahon. There were strong competitions across all categories. We were quite successful. Congratulation to the following: Gold medal - Eliza Boyle; Silver medals - Ryan Dempsey, Johnathon Jackson; Bronze Medals - Iain Maguire, Eileen Boyle, Fabian Jaskiewicz and Gerald Dempsey; Fourth places: John Boyle and Jakub Pawlowski. Children competed with such enthusiasm and our thanks also to the parents, who came along and cheer the competitors. Well done to everyone who participated – regardless of medals colour or placing, you were great representatives of Granard and we hope you all enjoyed the experience and fun of Athletics Finals.


We have two events taking place in Granard Library in July for children: Tuesday, 14 July commencing at 2.00pm - a Bunnyhop with Chris for Under 8 year olds. Breffni Challenge

This year’s Breffni 3 Province Challenge takes place on Saturday, 1st August. All routes will take the cycle through the 3 Provinces of Ulster, Connaught and Leinster. Start/Finish in Arva Co. Cavan. Online registration at Price Half Marathon €30; 10K - €25. 5K: €25 adults. €10 child U-12. Local man Johnny Macken is once again taking part and would appreciate your support. Maps available on


Congratulations to Longford Co. Minors and their mentors on their win over hotly favoured Meath on Saturday last in Glennon Bros. Pearse Park. Final score 1-9 to Meath’s 0-8 pts. Captain Connor Berry played a pivotal role in the final stages of the match in securing a victory for Longford. They are now in the Leinster Final to be played in Croke Park on Sunday, 12 July against Kildare. This is the curtain raiser to Westmeath and Dublin in the senior final.

The Longford seniors are off to Ennis this Saturday and we wish the team and their mentors well in Round 2A of the All-Ireland qualifiers against Clare.

Golden Jubilee

Best wishes to Fr. John Quinn P.P. Gortletteragh who will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood on Sunday 5 July at an event organised in Lough Rynn Castle Mohill. Fr. Quinn previously worked in St. Mary’s Parish Granard. The event starts at 5.00pm and tickets can be obtained by contacting Dympna Quinn on 087-1252820.


Congratulations to Fr. Seamus O’Rourke who following his recent ordination to the priesthood celebrated Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Granard on Saturday night last 27 June at 8.30pm. Symbols were brought to the alter prior to Mass by the various groups Fr. Seamus was involved with over the years including his former schools Bunlahy N.S. and Cnoc Mhuire Granard. The choir under the guidance of St. Maeve were just excellent for the occasion; former classmates; Ballymore and St. Mary’s G.A.A. Celebrations continued in the Community Centre where Fr. Seamus imparted his blessing on all present. We wish him many happy and healthy years in the future.

Cemetery Sunday

Mass will be celebrated in the New Cemetery at Granardkille on Sunday, 26 July at 1.00pm and in Granardkille on Sunday, 2 August at 11.30am. Please help to have our Cemeteries looking well. There are many people laid to rest in Granardkille Cemetery who have no family members left to care for their graves. Perhaps people could give a helping hand to tidy and maintain these graves.

Historical Group

The group had a guided tour of St. Mel’s Cathedral on Thursday evening last with Bishop Emeritus Colm O’Reilly as our guide. The in depth tour gave everyone a greater insight into the restoration of the building and we can now see the reasons why the Cathedral has recently received two major architectural awards. Following the Cathedral tour the group travelling to Ardagh Heritage Centre for some light refreshments and talk on the history of Ardagh. Thanks to Jackie Kennedy for co-ordinating this very interesting evening.

Streete Parish Park

The annual All-Ireland Vintage Day takes place in Streete Parish Park on Sunday, 12 July. The event is host to the All-Ireland Irish Vintage Society National Rally. Exhibitions and demonstrations throughout the day; entertainment for children all day. Annual Dog show will be held. Outdoor Bandstand with all day entertainment. Something for all the family. The guild are having their annual outing on Thursday 16 July starting off in Athlone with a cruise on the Shannon to Clonmacnoise for a guided tour; return to Athlone for shopping followed by evening meal in Glasson. Anyone who may be interested in travelling with the group should contact Liz on 087-1351087 for further information. Pitch and Putt practice has been arranged for this Thursday 2 July in Granard at 7pm, also for Thursday 9 July in Ballinalee at 7pm. All players must bring their own clubs and balls to Granard. Congratulations to Charlie and Loraine Burns, Robinstown, Granard on the birth of their baby boy, Cillian. Congratulations also to proud grandparents Terry and Brigie.

Gun Club

The club held their annual general meeting on 24 June and the following officers were elected - Chairman: Joe Coyle; Secretary: Tommy Lynch; Treasurer: Patsy Cooke; Safety Officer: Owe Martin; Fund Officer: Joe Coyle. On Sunday, 12 July Granard Club are representing Co. Longford in the All Ireland sporting shoot in Mullingar Shooting grounds. Best of luck to the team – Charlie Matthews; Owen Martin; Joe Coyle; Tommy Lynch; Trevor Reilly; Brian Harkin and Ryan McLoughlin (U-21). On Sunday, 19 July the club are holding the Annual Terry Sheridan Memorial Shoot. There will be a presentation the Boomerang Sunday night with music by Seamus Farrell. All are welcome.


Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Granard at 8.45pm. Jackpot is €20K. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and Granard G.A.A. Clubs. Your continued support is much appreciated.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped into the Centre or to An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.
