Castlepollard Credit Union Schools Quiz took place on Monday, February 2nd in Hotel Castlepollard. There was an excellent attendance with 24 teams from the local schools taking part. Quizmaster Seamus McDermott did a great job as always. There were U.11 and U.13 categories in the quiz, and Collinstown N.S. were the winners of both categories. The winning U.13 Collinstown team was Laura Isdell, Alan McKeon, John Connolly and Cormac O’Fearghail. The winning U.11 Collinstown team was Kevin Hogan, Caoimhe McKeon, Liam O’Fearghail and Sean Hallissey. The winners received a prize of 80.00 euro per team and a trophy. Well done to both teams on their success. They go through to the next round (Chapter Quiz) which takes place in Athlone Springs Hotel on Friday, February 27th, at 8pm. The other results of the quiz are as follows:- U-13 - 2nd Prize (60 euro per team) Whitehall N.S. - Emma Kilcoyne, Caithlin O’Boyle, Dylan Brady and Nathan Smyth. U-13 - 3rd Prize (40 euro per team) Castlepollard Parochial School - Esther Cowan, Craig Gillespie, Zeta Gordon and Sophie Newman. U-11 - 2nd Prize (60 euro per team) Fore N.S. - Robyn O’Brien, Lucia Holland, Elizabeth Walsh and Roisin Walsh. 3rd Prize (10 euro per team member) Castlepollard N.S. - Aaron Daly, Lucas Holtkamp and Kevin Roddy. Congratulations and very well done to all concerned, and thanks to the parents and teachers for their work in preparing the children and accompanying them to the quiz.

Coffee morning

Show your love for family carers this Valentine’s week at the Longford Carers Association tea/coffee morning on Thursday next, February 12th, from 10.00am to 12.00pm in the Family Centre, St. Mel’s Road, Longford.

Table quiz

Local man, David Higgins is heading to Nicaragua this Summer for 6-7 weeks to work with UCD Volunteers Overseas. As part of the project he will be teaching in the town of Somoto, in North West Nicaragua. Education in Nicaragua is very poor with 1 out of 10 Nicaraguans unable to read or write and only 29% of children completing primary school. Money raised will go to both teaching resources and construction projects in the town of Somoto. David is hosting a Charity Table Quiz in Hotel Castlepollard on Friday night, February 20th. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Book club

Castlepollard Book are meeting in Castlepollard Library next Tuesday, February 10th, from 6.45pm to 7.45pm. Two books are up for review. One is “A History of Loneliness” by John Boyne. The other book is “Friendship Bread” by Darien Gee. All are welcome to join, and further details may be had by contacting Castlepollard Library on 044-9332199.
