Art Appreciation

Are you interested in the history of art and discovering some of the greatest paintings in the world, then join renowned art critic and historian, Ciaran MacGonigal for a series of talks in Granard Branch Library commencing on this Thursday evening, 25 September at 7.00pm. Granard I.C.A. guild in association with Granard Community Library are hosting the Course with Mr. MacGonigal Art Critic and Historian, former Director of the RHA Gallery; the Hunt Museum Limerick and Chair of the Dublin City Art Gallery. This course is funded by LWETB. All are welcome.

Alzheimer Society of Ireland

The Longford Branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland would like to announce that our church gate collection will be held on this Saturday and Sunday, 27 and 28 September throughout the county. The money raised will greatly contribute to our continued services in the area. These include a home care service; a respite service; a transport service and a day care facility. All of these services are dedicated to respecting the rights of people with Alzheimer’s disease and supporting their carers. Please give generously. Lisryan Road Race

3K and 6K Walk or Run starting and ending at Crossroads Inn, Lisryan, Sunday, 28 September at 11am. Registration from 10am. Race starts 11am. Families welcome. Entry fee adults €10 and children €5. Many prizes. All proceeds going towards Lisryan Community Development Fund.

Cycle for Marie

Brendan and Carmel would like to extend a very big thank you to all who made this cycle in aid of the Irish Cancer Society such a great success. To all the cyclists, stewards, people who made donations, those who organized the refreshments on the day, provided transport, helped with First Aid and assisted in any other way, we appreciate it so much. We had over sixty cyclists on the day and we thank you all for your great support. 

Coffee morning

Thank you to all who supported the Coffee morning in the Resource Centre and in McElvaney’s, Coolarty last Thursday,18 September in aid of Longford Hospice Homecare. A total of €1,000 was raised for this great service so once again many thanks to everyone.

Social Dancing

Granard Community Playgroup will be holding a table quiz on Friday, 26th September 2014 in Fay’s at 9.30pm. Please support. We would love to see you all there.

St. Christopher’s

The Granard Branch of St Christopher’s are holding a charity evening with The Merchant Archers at Creegan’s Bunlahy, on Saturday, 4 October 2014. There will be a raffle and door prizes. The Perfect Petal Florist

The Perfect Petal Florist and Gift Shop will be starting  knitting/crochet classes on Wednesday mornings 10.30am-12.00pm and on Thursday evening from 6.30pm-8pm. Places are limited, so please book in advance. Please bring along a project that you would like to work on. Also starting soon is a kids craft afternoon on Saturdays from 2.30 pm to 4pm. Moatsiders Active Age

Our first meeting of the Autumn season will take place on this Thursday, 25 September at 2.30pm in Rath Mhuire Centre. We are looking forward to welcoming everybody back and as usual we have very busy schedule for the coming months including outings, health and well being activities, social events and much more. Granard Writer’s Group

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, 29 September in Rath Mhuire Centre at 3pm. We are delighted to say that our recently produced CD ‘Beneath the Moat ‘has completely sold out and we thank everyone who supported us with this project. The groups aim is to promote creative writing in an enjoyable and relaxed environment and we always welcome new members and new ideas. For any information contact Jackie at 6686309.

Local History/Heritage Group

We have had great interest in the establishment of this group, which we had hoped to start earlier in the year but due to various circumstances we were unable to do so, but we are delighted to say that the group will be starting in October and we will be finalising times and dates in the next couple of weeks. Dolmen Centre, Aughnacliffe

All groups and activities will be recommencing shortly at the Dolmen Centre in Aughnacliffe (Dolmen Failte Active Age Club – Dolmen Day Care Services – North Longford Men’s Group). Family Fun Day

Abbeylara GAA are holding their Family Fun Day and BBQ on this Sunday, 28 September in Lynch Park, commencing at 1.30pm. This event was postponed due to the bad weather. Something for everyone is guaranteed. Come along and enjoy the fun.

The Draft Register of Electors 2015/2016 is now being prepared. If you live in County Longford and wish to vote you should check that you are registered correctly to vote. If you have any family member resident in Co. Longford who will be 18 years or over by the 15 February 2015 they may also be registered to vote. Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard commencing at 8.45pm. Proceeds go to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated. Jackpot is now €17,300.

Country Markets

Granard Country Markets continue each Friday at Upper Main Street beside the Post Office. They now have local honey in stock as well as the usual supply of beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables; home baking; crafts; firewood etc.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Large selection of winter clothes now in stock, coats, jackets & boots, come in and browse at your ease in our newly refurbished Siopa. Children’s clothes for all ages, jewellery, toys, books & a treasure trove of  bric-a-brac. Please drop in your cast offs to An Siopa or the centre, everything welcome. An Siopa is open Thursday Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm. All monies earned in the shop goes directly and totally to projects in the Community.

Talent Contest

Granard Credit Union Launches Talent Contest CU factor - Have you got the CU factor? if yes you could be on your way to winning the top prize of €500 courtesy of Granard Credit Union. Ten to nineteen year olds in Granard area are being invited to share their talents as part of a new talent competition in the area organised by Granard Credit Union. The talent show is open to all dancers, singers, bands, jugglers, comedy acts etc. The closing date for applications is 25 September 2014. Auditions are scheduled to take place on Saturday 27 September and the local final will take place in Granard Community Centre on Saturday, 4 October. The top two acts will go forward to represent Granard Credit Union in the regional final on Saturday, the 18 October in Ballinasloe with a top prize of €1,000. Application forms are available from the counter in Granard Credit Union.

Music Lessons

Enrolment for music lessons on Tin Whistle; Piano Accordion and Keyboard with Philip Clarke will be held in Crawford’s Lounge, Abbeylara on this Thursday, 25 September at 7.00pm. Price is €4 per class.

Christmas Lights

The Granard Christmas Lights committee are actively fundraising to buy and install new Christmas lighting this year. Each business is requested to sell a book of tickets amongst their customers friends and family. Let’s all come together to be proud and believe in our town and put Granard at the top of the list as the town to visit and shop in this Christmas.

Death

The death of Johnny Cronogue, Longford Road, Granard and formerly of Church Street occurred on Thursday last at Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar. Removal took place from his late residence on Saturday evening to St. Mary’s Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Sunday followed by burial in Granardkille Old Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
